Working on Direct Verbal with Your Child at Home

Direct Verbal at home means giving your child one clear spoken model of a word, then pausing to let them copy it — tied to things they want, repeated in short joyful moments through the day. Reward every attempt, keep it playful, and seek a speech therapist's guidance if your child isn't responding or using words as expected.

Direct Verbal at Home: A Parent's Guide — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Some of the most powerful language-building moments happen at your kitchen table, not in a therapy room — and Direct Verbal is one technique you can weave into everyday life.

In short

Direct Verbal is a simple coaching technique: you give your child a clear, single spoken model of the word or phrase you want them to say, then pause and give them space to copy it. At home, the magic is in keeping it short, joyful and tied to what your child already wants — a toy, a snack, a tickle. Done little and often through the day, these small repetitions add up faster than one long "practice" session.

How to work on Direct Verbal at home

Set it up for success
  • Get down to your child's eye level and remove distractions — switch off the TV, put your phone aside.
  • Choose words your child is motivated by: "bubbles", "more", "open", "go", a favourite snack.
  • Use one clear word at a time. Say it slowly and warmly — "ball" — not a long sentence.

Model, then wait

  • Hold up the wanted item. Say the target word once: "juice."
  • Then pause — count five seconds silently in your head. This wait is where learning happens; resist filling the silence.
  • If your child attempts the word, or any close version, celebrate and give the item straight away. Reward the try, not perfect speech.

Keep it playful and frequent

  • Build it into routines that repeat naturally — bath time, snack, getting dressed, going up stairs ("up… up… up").
  • Aim for many tiny moments across the day rather than one long drill. Stop while your child is still enjoying it.
  • Match your model to their level: a single sound or word for an early communicator, a short two-word phrase ("want more") once single words are reliable.

Gentle progression

  • When a word comes easily, raise the bar slightly — from "more" to "more please", or add a new word to the set.
  • Never turn it into a test ("say it properly") — pressure can switch a child off. Keep your tone light and your praise immediate.

When to seek extra support

If your child shows little response to spoken models after consistent practice, isn't using words or clear gestures in the expected range for their age, or seems frustrated by attempts to communicate, it's worth a developmental check. A speech and language therapist can tailor Direct Verbal prompts to exactly where your child is and coach you on the next steps.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child responds to your spoken model with any attempt within a few seconds, and whether words or clear gestures are growing over weeks. Little or no response after consistent practice, or rising frustration, is a cue to seek a developmental check.

Try this at home

Pick one motivating word a day — like 'bubbles' — and model it once, then wait five silent seconds. Reward any attempt instantly with the thing they want.

Frequently asked

What exactly is the Direct Verbal technique?

It's a simple coaching method where you give your child one clear spoken model of the word or phrase you'd like them to say, then pause and give them space to copy it. You reward any attempt, not just perfect speech.

How long should I wait after saying the word?

Pause for about five seconds — count silently in your head. This quiet wait gives your child the chance to process and attempt the word. Resist the urge to fill the silence.

How often should we practise?

Many tiny moments across the day work far better than one long session. Weave it into snacks, bath time and play, and stop while your child is still enjoying it.

My child only makes a sound, not the full word. Should I reward that?

Yes — reward the try. Any close attempt deserves immediate praise and the wanted item. Pushing for perfect speech too soon can discourage a child; build up gradually.

When should I see a speech therapist?

If your child shows little response after consistent practice, isn't using words or clear gestures as expected for their age, or seems frustrated trying to communicate, book a developmental check so a therapist can tailor the approach.
