Simple things you can do every day

Talk through your day (self-talk and parallel talk)
  • Describe what you are doing: "I'm pouring the water… now it's full."
  • Describe what your child is doing: "You found the red ball!"
  • Keep sentences short and clear — match their level, then add one extra word.

Build turn-taking

  • Pause and wait expectantly after you speak — count slowly to five in your head.
  • Treat any sound, gesture or look as a turn, and respond as if it's meaningful.
  • Play give-and-take games: rolling a ball, peek-a-boo, "ready… steady… go!"

Make words worth saying

  • Offer choices: hold up two items and ask "Banana or biscuit?"
  • Pause favourite routines so they signal "more" with a sound, sign or word.
  • Name things they love and repeat the word naturally during play.

Read, sing and rhyme

  • Share picture books daily — point, name, and let them turn the pages.
  • Sing songs with actions; leave the last word out for them to fill in.
  • Repetition and rhythm help words stick.

A gentle tip: expand rather than correct. If your child says "car go", reply warmly with "Yes, the car is going fast!" — they hear the fuller version without feeling wrong.

When to check in with a professional

Every child builds language at their own pace, and home practice helps most children flourish. But if your child shows little babble or gesture by their first birthday, few or no single words by around 16–18 months, isn't combining words by two years, or seems to lose words they once used, it's worth a friendly developmental check.
