Crawling Under

How to practise Crawling Under with your child at home

Crawling under cushions, chairs or a blanket bridge is a playful home activity that builds shoulder strength, core stability and body awareness. Keep it short, joyful and child-led, place a toy as motivation, and lower the gap gradually. Check in with a clinician if your child avoids arm weight or isn't crawling by around 9-10 months.

Crawling Under: Playful Home Activities — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Crawling under a low bridge of cushions isn't just play — it's your child's growing body learning where it is in space.

In short

Crawling under is a brilliant home activity that builds shoulder strength, core stability, body awareness and motor planning — all while feeling like a game. You can practise it with everyday things like dining chairs, blankets over two stools, or your own raised legs. Keep it short, joyful and led by your child's curiosity, and praise every wriggle through.

Try this at home

Set up a simple tunnel
  • Drape a bedsheet or blanket over two chairs to make a low bridge.
  • Place a favourite toy on the far side so there's a reason to cross.
  • Start with a wide, easy gap; lower it gently as your child grows confident.

Make it playful

  • Crawl through first yourself so your child sees how it's done.
  • Use a happy cue — "Ready, set, under we go!" — to build anticipation.
  • Try "under the table tunnel", under your bent knees, or under a row of cushions.

Build the skill gradually

  • Begin with a short distance, then add length or a gentle turn.
  • Encourage a true belly-and-hands crawl, not bottom-shuffling, when you can.
  • Keep sessions to 5–10 minutes — stop while it's still fun.

This activity strengthens the same muscles and coordination that support standing, walking and later skills like dressing and writing. Visit /crawling-under for variations by ability.

When to check in

Most children love this game and grow stronger week by week. If your child consistently avoids weight on their arms, tires very quickly, uses only one side of the body, or isn't yet attempting to crawl by around 9–10 months, it's worth a friendly developmental check rather than waiting.

What to watch

Notice if your child consistently avoids putting weight on their arms, tires very quickly, leans on only one side of the body, or isn't attempting to crawl by around 9-10 months — these are worth a friendly developmental check.

Try this at home

Put a favourite toy just past the tunnel so there's a happy reason to crawl under and reach it — motivation does the teaching for you.

Frequently asked

What age can my child start practising crawling under?

Once your child is crawling confidently on hands and knees — often around 8 to 10 months — you can introduce a low, easy tunnel. Keep the gap wide at first and let curiosity lead. Every child's pace is different, so follow your child rather than a calendar.

What can I use to make a crawling-under tunnel at home?

Everyday items work beautifully: a bedsheet draped over two dining chairs, a low coffee table, cushions stacked into an arch, or even your own raised knees. Start with a wide gap and gently lower it as your child grows more confident.

How does crawling under help my child develop?

It strengthens the shoulders, arms and core, builds body awareness and motor planning, and supports balance — all foundations for standing, walking and later skills like dressing and writing. Just as importantly, it's fun and builds confidence.
