Crawling Tunnel

Working on Crawling Tunnel at Home with Your Child

A crawling tunnel is a playful home activity that builds shoulder, core and hip strength while encouraging hands-and-knees crawling. Set up a soft fabric tunnel or a bedsheet over chairs, invite your child through with toys and smiles, keep sessions short and joyful, and stay within arm's reach for safety.

Crawling Tunnel: Playful Strength-Building at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

A tunnel turns the floor into an adventure — and every wiggle through it builds the strength, coordination and confidence crawling needs.

In short

A crawling tunnel is a simple, joyful way to encourage your child to crawl on hands and knees, strengthening shoulders, core and hips while building visual-motor coordination. Set it up at home as inviting play — never a drill — using a fabric pop-up tunnel, or chairs draped with a bedsheet. Keep sessions short, playful and praise-filled, and follow your child's lead.

How to do it at home

Set it up
  • Use a soft fabric pop-up tunnel, or make one with sofa cushions, chairs and a bedsheet over a low table.
  • Place it on a non-slip mat or carpet so little hands and knees have grip.
  • Keep the tunnel short to start — your child should always see light at the other end.

Invite the crawl

  • Kneel at the far end and call your child by name, clapping and smiling.
  • Place a favourite toy, a torch beam or a rolling ball just inside, then a little further each time.
  • Crawl through yourself first to show it's safe and fun — children love to copy.

Build it up gently

  • Start with 2–3 trips, then stop while it's still fun.
  • Add a gentle slope (a cushion under one end) or a soft "obstacle" to crawl over for variety.
  • Cheer every attempt — even a peek inside counts as a win.

Keep it safe

  • Always stay within arm's reach; never zip or close the tunnel ends.
  • Watch for tiredness — fussing or flopping means it's time to rest.

The Pinnacle way

At Pinnacle Blooms Network, a crawling tunnel is one of many play-based ways our therapists build gross-motor strength and coordination, often woven into occupational therapy goals. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — home play supports your child's progress but does not replace assessment.

Trusted sources

Guided by developmental-milestone guidance from the CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." programme and the American Academy of Pediatrics' HealthyChildren resources on movement and play, which describe crawling as a key gross-motor stage in the first year.

What to watch

If your child is not yet crawling or pulling along the floor by around 12 months, or shows strong one-sided preference, mention it at your next developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Roll a soft ball through the tunnel ahead of your child — chasing it makes crawling feel like a game, not a task.

Frequently asked

At what age can my child start using a crawling tunnel?

Most babies enjoy a short, soft tunnel once they are crawling or beginning to push along the floor, often from around 7–10 months. Always stay close and keep the tunnel short so your child can see you at the other end.

What if my child is afraid to go inside the tunnel?

That's completely normal. Crawl through yourself, keep both ends open and bright, and place a favourite toy just inside. Let your child peek, touch and explore at their own pace — never push them in.

How long should each tunnel session last?

Keep it short and joyful — just a few trips, ending while your child is still having fun. Two or three happy goes are far more valuable than a long session that becomes tiring or frustrating.
