Toe-Walking

Helping a Young Child Who Walks on Their Toes

Most toddlers outgrow toe-walking by age 3. Help at home with flat-foot play, barefoot walking on varied surfaces, gentle calf stretches and supportive shoes. Seek a developmental check if it is persistent past age 2-3, one-sided, comes with tight calves, heels that won't flatten, tripping, speech or social differences, or any loss of skills.

Toe-Walking in Toddlers: Gentle Ways to Help — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When your little one tiptoes everywhere, it's natural to wonder whether it's just a phase — and there's a lot you can gently do at home while you find out.

In short

Many toddlers walk on their toes some of the time as they learn to balance, and most settle into a flat-footed gait on their own by around age 3. You can help by encouraging plenty of flat-foot play, gentle calf stretches, barefoot walking on different surfaces, and supportive shoes — while keeping an eye on whether your child can put their heels down when reminded. If toe-walking is constant, only on one side, comes with tight calves, tip-toes that won't flatten, or any loss of skills, it's worth a developmental check rather than waiting.

Things you can do at home

Make heels-down the fun option
  • Play games that need a flat foot — squatting to pick up toys, crouching like a frog, climbing, walking up gentle slopes or stairs.
  • Walk barefoot on grass, sand, textured mats or bubble wrap; varied surfaces invite the whole foot down.
  • Try heel-walking races ("can you walk like a penguin?") and standing on a small step with heels hanging slightly off, gently lowering.

Keep the calves loose

  • Gentle, never-forced calf stretches after a warm bath, when muscles are relaxed.
  • Encourage sitting cross-legged and squatting during play rather than the W-sit.

Support the feet

  • Well-fitting, flexible shoes with a firm heel for outdoor walking; let toes be free and flat indoors.

Notice the pattern, not just the moment

  • Can your child stand and walk flat when reminded? Occasional, correctable toe-walking is usually less concerning than a foot that simply won't come down.

When to seek a check

Please book a developmental review if toe-walking is persistent past age 2–3, happens on one side only, comes with tight or stiff calves, heels that won't reach the floor, frequent tripping, tip-toeing plus delayed talking or social differences, or any loss of skills. These point to causes worth understanding early, and the right support is far gentler when started sooner.

Trusted sources

Guidance here is consistent with the American Academy of Pediatrics and HealthyChildren.org on toddler gait, and with CDC developmental milestone resources on movement and play. These describe toe-walking as common in early toddlers, usually resolving on its own, and worth review when it persists or comes with other differences.

What to watch

Seek a check if toe-walking is constant rather than occasional, happens on one side only, comes with tight calves or heels that won't reach the floor, frequent tripping, tip-toeing alongside delayed talking or social differences, or any loss of skills.

Try this at home

Turn heels-down into a game: barefoot walks on grass, sand or a textured mat, plus squatting to pick up toys, naturally invite the whole foot to the floor.

Frequently asked

Is toe-walking always a sign of a problem?

No. Many toddlers walk on their toes some of the time as they learn to balance, and most settle into a flat-footed walk on their own by around age 3. It becomes worth a check when it is constant, one-sided, or paired with tight calves, tripping, or differences in talking or social skills.

At what age should I be concerned about toe-walking?

Occasional toe-walking under 2 is usually typical. If your child is still toe-walking most of the time past age 2-3, cannot put their heels down when reminded, or has other developmental differences, a developmental check is sensible rather than waiting.

Do calf stretches really help?

Gentle, never-forced calf stretches — best after a warm bath when muscles are relaxed — can help keep the calves loose, which supports a flat-foot gait. They work best alongside plenty of flat-foot play and barefoot walking on varied surfaces. A physiotherapist can show you the safest technique.

Should my child wear special shoes for toe-walking?

Well-fitting, flexible shoes with a firm heel help support an outdoor flat-foot walk, while free, flat feet indoors and barefoot play on textured surfaces encourage the whole foot down. If toe-walking persists, a clinician can advise whether any extra support is needed.
