Supporting a Child with Developmental Regression in Early-Years Settings

When a child seems to lose skills they once had, a calm, observant early-years worker can be one of the most important people in getting them the right help, fast.

Developmental regression — when a child loses skills they previously had, such as words, play, social warmth or motor abilities — is always worth taking seriously and should prompt a prompt developmental and medical review. As an early-years worker, your most powerful role is to notice, document and reassure while keeping the child's day predictable, calm and supportive. You don't diagnose; you observe carefully, share what you see with parents and clinicians, and keep the child feeling safe and included.

How you can support the child

• Document what you observe — note specific skills that seem to have faded (words, gestures, eye contact, play, walking, toileting), roughly when you first noticed, and whether it is steady or fluctuating. Dated notes are gold for the clinical team.
• Share gently and early with parents — describe what you've seen factually and without alarm, and encourage a developmental and medical check soon. Regression is one of the situations where a prompt review matters.
• Keep routines steady and predictable — familiar sequences, visual schedules and the same key adults reduce stress and help the child cope while assessment is arranged.
• Meet the child where they are now — offer activities at their current level, not the level they were at, so they experience success rather than frustration. Re-introduce simpler play, more gestures, more visual support.
• Protect connection — warm, low-pressure interaction, following the child's lead in play, and short bursts of one-to-one time help them stay engaged and trusting.
• Reduce sensory and demand overload — a calmer corner, quieter transitions and extra time can prevent distress while skills are fragile.

Loss of established skills is different from a child simply being slow to gain new ones. Regression can have many causes — some benign, some medical — and a clinician needs to look for the reason. This is why your timely, factual flag to the family is so valuable: it helps the child reach assessment without delay. Your job is to support and report, never to interpret the cause.
