How regression is assessed

Assessment looks at the story over time as much as the skills today:

• A clear before-and-after history. The clinician will ask exactly which skills appeared, when, and when they faded — words your child used to say, eye contact, pointing, walking, feeding. Old videos and photos are genuinely valuable here, so bring them.

• A medical review. Because regression can have health causes, the clinician checks for things that need a doctor's attention — including hearing, seizures and general health. • Pattern, not a snapshot. One quiet phase is not regression; a genuine, sustained loss of established skills is. The assessment distinguishes between the two and tracks change over follow-up.

When to seek review promptly

If your child has clearly stopped using words, gestures or social skills they once had, or has lost motor skills like sitting or walking, arrange a developmental and medical review soon rather than waiting.
