isn't saying any words

My child isn't saying any words — should I be worried?

A child who isn't saying any words may be a late talker or may benefit from a developmental check — early communication includes understanding, gestures, eye contact and babble, not words alone. A check is reassuring and the earlier support begins, the gentler it is. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

When your little one isn't saying words yet, the worry can feel enormous — but worry is not a diagnosis, and early support changes everything.

In short

A child who isn't saying any words may simply be a late talker — or may benefit from a gentle developmental check. The single most useful thing to know: early communication is far bigger than words alone. Pointing, gestures, eye contact, sharing attention and understanding what you say all matter just as much. If you're worried, a check is wise and reassuring — not alarming — and the earlier any support begins, the easier and more natural it is.

What to look at (beyond words)

Words are only the tip of communication. Before and around the first words, look for these early building blocks:
  • Understanding — does your child respond to their name, follow simple instructions ("give me the ball"), or look when you point?
  • Gestures — pointing, waving, reaching up to be lifted, showing you things.
  • Eye contact and sharing — looking between you and a toy, bringing you objects to share enjoyment.
  • Sounds and babble — chains of babble ("bababa", "dada"), copying sounds, taking turns with noises.
  • Joint play — back-and-forth games like peek-a-boo, clapping, give-and-take.

Many children who are slow to say words understand plenty and communicate richly through gestures — these are very encouraging signs. A child who isn't using gestures, isn't responding to their name, or seems not to share attention deserves a closer look, alongside the absence of words.

When a check makes sense

General guideposts (not strict rules): most children say a few single words by around their first birthday and many words by 18 months, beginning to join two words by around two years. Consider a developmental and communication check if your child is past these stages with no words, has lost words or skills they once had, isn't using gestures, or isn't responding to their name. A check is simply gathering clear information — it often brings reassurance, and where support helps, starting early makes it gentle and effective.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or checklist. What to watch

Watch whether your child understands simple words, responds to their name, points and uses gestures, shares attention by looking between you and a toy, and babbles. A check makes sense if there are no words past the usual stages, no gestures, no response to name, or any loss of skills once gained.

Try this at home

Talk through your day in short, simple words as you go — 'cup', 'all gone', 'up we go' — and pause to give your child a turn to respond with a sound, look or gesture. Reward any attempt to communicate with warm attention; this is how words grow.

Frequently asked

At what age should my child say their first words?

As a general guide, many children say a few single words around their first birthday and a wider range of words by 18 months. These are guideposts, not strict deadlines — children vary. If your child is well past these stages with no words, a gentle developmental check is wise.

My child understands me but doesn't speak — is that okay?

Good understanding is a very encouraging sign and often points to a late talker rather than a deeper concern. Still, if words remain absent past the usual stages, a check helps confirm everything is on track and offers support if needed.

Will my child catch up on their own?

Some late talkers do catch up naturally, especially when they understand language well and communicate through gestures. There is no way to be certain in advance, which is exactly why a check is valuable — it tells you whether to simply watch or to begin gentle, early support.

Does being slow to talk mean autism?

Not on its own. Delayed words have many possible reasons. Communication is broader than speech, so clinicians also look at gestures, eye contact, response to name and shared play. Only a qualified clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre can form any diagnosis.
