Chores

My 4-year-old can't do simple chores yet — should I worry?

At four years, doing chores independently is still a learning-in-progress skill, not an expected milestone. Most children manage tiny one-step tasks with reminders and plenty of help, while reliability and independence come later — so this is usually no cause for concern. Seek a developmental check only if chores are hard alongside delays in following instructions, attention, hand skills or talking. This is reason to observe gently, not to worry.

4-Year-Old Not Doing Chores Yet? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Noticing what your four-year-old can and can't do yet is exactly the kind of loving attention that helps them grow.

In short

For most four-year-olds, helping with simple chores is still very much a learning-in-progress skill — not a milestone they should have mastered. Many children this age can manage tiny tasks (putting toys in a box, carrying their plate to the sink) with reminders and lots of cheerful guidance, but doing them reliably and independently comes later. This is usually no cause for concern. A gentle developmental check is wise only if chores are difficult alongside delays in following instructions, attention, motor skills, or talking.

What's typical at four years

Chores are really a bundle of skills working together — understanding instructions, remembering steps, using hands well, and staying with a task. At four, children are still building each of these, so expect plenty of help, repetition and a short attention span. What's reassuring to see:
  • Helps with simple, one-step tasks — putting toys away, fetching a nappy, placing cutlery on the table, when shown and reminded.
  • Follows two-step instructions — "Pick up the cup and put it in the sink."
  • Enjoys being a helper — wants to copy adults and join in, even if the result is messy.
  • Manages bits of self-care — washing hands, pulling up trousers, trying to dress with help.

Doing chores thoroughly and independently is not expected yet — that grows over the next few years.

When a gentle check is wise

Consider a developmental review if, alongside chores, you notice your child:
  • Struggles to follow simple one- or two-step instructions.
  • Finds it very hard to use their hands for everyday tasks (gripping, carrying, tidying).
  • Shows little interest in copying or joining family activities.
  • Has delays in talking, understanding, attention or play compared with peers.

This isn't a diagnosis — it simply means a calm, professional look can turn small questions into early opportunities.

What to watch

Most four-year-olds need reminders and help with simple chores — independence comes later. Seek a developmental check if your child struggles to follow one- or two-step instructions, finds everyday hand tasks very hard, shows little interest in copying or joining family activities, or has delays in talking, attention or play alongside the chores.

Try this at home

Turn one tiny chore into a daily game — "Let's race the toys into the box!" Keep it to a single, clear step, show it each time, and celebrate the effort. Repetition and praise build the skill far faster than expecting independence.

Frequently asked

Should my 4-year-old be doing chores on their own?

Not yet, independently. Most four-year-olds can help with simple one-step tasks — like putting toys away or carrying a plate — when shown and reminded, but doing chores thoroughly and on their own develops over the next few years. Plenty of help and repetition is completely normal at this age.

When should I be concerned that my child can't do chores?

A gentle developmental check is wise if difficulty with chores comes alongside other signs — trouble following one- or two-step instructions, very limited hand skills for everyday tasks, little interest in copying or joining family activities, or delays in talking, attention or play. On its own, not doing chores is rarely a worry at four.

How can I help my four-year-old learn to do chores?

Break each task into a single, clear step, show it every time, and make it playful. Praise effort rather than the result, keep tasks short, and repeat daily. Children this age love being a helper, so joining in alongside you works far better than expecting independence.
