Pinnacle Pinnacle® ASK

the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

Is PECS suitable for toddlers?

PECS is well suited to toddlers who are not yet talking: it teaches a child to hand over a picture to request something they want, building the social give-and-take of communication from the first step. It does not delay speech and often supports spoken words emerging. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

When words haven't arrived yet, a picture handed over with intent can be a toddler's very first clear way of saying "I want that".

In short

Yes — PECS can be very suitable for toddlers, and is one of the most widely used early-communication approaches for little ones who aren't yet talking. It teaches a child to hand a picture card to another person to ask for something they want, building the social back-and-forth of communication from the very first step. It's gentle, motivating and designed so a child succeeds straight away — and importantly, it does not stop or delay speech; for many children it actually supports spoken words emerging alongside.

Why it works well for little ones

  • It starts with what your child loves. The first exchange is built around a favourite toy or snack, so your child is motivated to communicate from day one.
  • *It teaches intent, not just labels. From the start your toddler learns that communication is something you do with another person — they approach you, hand over a card, and get a result. That is the heart of language.
  • No prerequisites to begin. A child doesn't need to point, speak or make eye contact first. This makes PECS accessible for toddlers who are pre-verbal or minimally verbal.
  • It eases frustration. When a child can finally ask clearly, the meltdowns that come from not being understood* often soften.
  • It can grow with your child. PECS moves through stages — from single pictures to building short sentences — and many children begin using spoken words as they progress.

PECS works best when it's chosen for your particular child and woven into everyday routines, with your family coached to use it at home, not just in a therapy room.

When to seek a check

If your toddler is around 18–24 months and not yet using single words, isn't pointing or showing you things, or seems frustrated trying to make needs known, a developmental and speech-language check is a kind, sensible next step. A therapist can confirm whether PECS, another communication system, or a blend is the right fit — and rule nothing in or out without proper assessment.

What to watch

Watch for a toddler around 18–24 months not using single words, not pointing or showing you things, or growing frustrated trying to make needs known — a sign to seek a developmental and speech-language check.

Try this at home

Keep a picture or photo of your child's favourite snack or toy within reach, and respond warmly the moment they hand or point to it — every successful exchange teaches them that communicating with you works.

Frequently asked

Will PECS stop my toddler from learning to talk?

No. PECS is designed to support communication and, for many children, spoken words emerge alongside it as they progress through the stages. It gives a child a way to communicate now while speech develops.

How young can a toddler start PECS?

PECS has no strict prerequisites and can begin when a child is motivated by favourite items and ready to make a simple exchange — often well within the toddler years. A speech-language therapist will confirm the right timing for your child.

Is PECS only for autistic children?

No. While PECS was developed within autism support, it helps many toddlers who are pre-verbal or minimally verbal for a range of reasons. A clinician decides whether it suits your particular child.
