How is Visual scored on the AbilityScore?
Visual ability in a toddler isn't a single test score. On the AbilityScore®, a Pinnacle clinician observes how your child uses vision in play — tracking, reaching, gazing, eye contact — alongside your observations, mapping to ICF sensory functions (b2). It complements, never replaces, a paediatric eye exam, and only a Pinnacle clinician can confirm what it means.
Seeing the world clearly is how a toddler learns to reach, explore and connect — so we look at how your little one uses their vision, not just whether they can see.
In short
Visual ability in a toddler is not scored by a single number from an eye chart. On the AbilityScore®, a qualified Pinnacle clinician observes how your child uses their vision in everyday play — tracking moving objects, fixing their gaze, reaching accurately, and making eye contact — and combines this with a warm conversation about what you notice at home. It maps to the ICF domain of sensory functions (b2), giving a picture of functional vision against your child's own baseline. How the assessment actually works
For a toddler, vision is read through behaviour and function, so the clinician watches real, playful moments:- Fixing and following — can your child lock onto a face or toy and smoothly track it as it moves?
- Reaching and eye–hand coordination — does your child reach accurately for what they see, judging distance and size?
- Visual attention — do they notice details, point to pictures, or search for a dropped object?
- Eye contact and social looking — using vision to share moments and connect with you.
- Your observations — squinting, tilting the head, bumping into things, or sitting very close to screens.
This is functional information — a complement to, never a replacement for, a paediatric ophthalmology eye examination. If a clear medical eye concern is suspected, the clinician will route you promptly for a specialist eye check.
When to seek a look
If your toddler rarely makes eye contact, doesn't follow moving objects, squints persistently, or seems to miss things in their line of sight, a gentle professional look is worthwhile now. Early support protects learning, play and confidence. The Pinnacle way
A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under the care of a qualified clinician — never from an online figure or a checklist. The AbilityScore® is a clinician-administered structured assessment that reads your child against their own baseline. What to watch
Seek a professional look if your toddler rarely makes eye contact, doesn't follow moving objects with their eyes, squints or tilts their head persistently, sits very close to screens or toys, or bumps into things in their path.
Try this at home
Play gentle tracking games: slowly move a bright toy side to side and up and down about an arm's length away, and watch whether your child's eyes follow smoothly. Roll a ball and see if they reach to the right spot.

Frequently asked
Is the Visual AbilityScore the same as an eye test?
No. It looks at how your child functionally uses their vision in everyday play — tracking, reaching, gazing and eye contact. It complements but never replaces a paediatric ophthalmology eye examination, and your clinician will route you for a specialist eye check if a medical concern is suspected.
Can you tell my toddler's exact vision number?
The AbilityScore® is a clinician-administered structured assessment of functional vision against your child's own baseline, not a precise optical measurement. We never share scoring formulae online — a clinical AbilityScore® is formed only at a Pinnacle centre under qualified clinician care.
At what age can visual ability be meaningfully assessed?
Functional vision can be gently observed throughout the toddler years (12–36 months) through play. If you notice concerns at any age, a developmental check is worthwhile — early understanding supports learning and confidence.
