Dyslexia is diagnosed through a structured, multi-step assessment — not a single test — usually when a child is around 6–8 years or older, once formal reading instruction has begun. A qualified clinician or psychologist gathers your child's history, rules out hearing and vision issues, and assesses reading accuracy, fluency, spelling and the underlying skills (like sound awareness) that drive reading. The diagnosis identifies a specific, unexpected difficulty with reading despite good effort, sound teaching and otherwise age-typical ability — so the right support can begin.

How the assessment works

A thorough dyslexia evaluation typically draws together several strands:

• Developmental and family history — early speech milestones, a family history of reading difficulty, and how reading has progressed at home and school.
• Ruling out other causes first — a hearing and vision check, because uncorrected sensory issues can look like a reading problem.
• Reading and language skills — word reading, reading speed and fluency, spelling, and comprehension.
• Underlying processing skills — phonological awareness (hearing and playing with the sounds in words), rapid naming, and verbal memory, which are the building blocks reading rests on.
• The "unexpected" picture — dyslexia is recognised when reading difficulty is out of step with the child's clear strengths in other areas, and persists despite good teaching.

Because reliable reading instruction usually begins around age 6, formal diagnosis before that is rarely meaningful. In younger children we watch and support the early signals — difficulty learning letter sounds, rhyming, or recalling words — rather than rushing to a label.
