Attention is best understood developmentally as a set of partially dissociable systems that mature on different timescales:- Alerting / sustained attention — the capacity to achieve and maintain a vigilant state. In toddlers this is indexed by look-duration paradigms, free-play attentiveness coding, and continuous performance tasks adapted for young children.
- Orienting / selective attention — covert and overt deployment toward salient stimuli, captured via gaze-contingent eye-tracking, visual search and cued spatial tasks.
- Executive attention — inhibitory control and conflict resolution, assessed with developmentally scaled instruments such as spatial conflict and child-adapted flanker-type tasks; this network shows protracted maturation through the preschool period.
Measurement modalities commonly combine: (1) laboratory behavioural tasks yielding reaction-time and accuracy indices; (2) eye-tracking for fine-grained latency and dwell-time metrics in pre-verbal cohorts; (3) standardised observational coding of attentiveness during structured play; and (4) caregiver- and educator-report questionnaires (temperament and effortful-control scales) that capture ecologically valid, everyday regulation.
