Phrase Expansion

Phrase Expansion at Home: A Parent's Simple Guide

Phrase expansion is repeating what your child says and adding one or two words — "milk" becomes "want milk." Woven into meals, bath, books and play, it models longer phrases naturally without pressure. Follow your child's lead, add just a little, and pause to let them try.

Your child says "milk" — and with one small, loving move, you can help "milk" become "want milk," then "I want milk." That move is phrase expansion, and you can do it at home, today.

In short

Phrase expansion means gently adding one or two words to what your child already says, modelling the next step without pressure or correction. You don't need special tools — just everyday moments, your warm attention, and the simple rule of "say it back, plus a little more." Children learn longer phrases by hearing them naturally many times a day.

How to do it at home

The core move: repeat + add one. When your child says a word or short phrase, say it back and add just one or two words. Keep it natural, not a drill.
  • Child: "car." You: "red car!" or "car go!"
  • Child: "more." You: "more juice?"
  • Child: "doggy run." You: "the doggy is running!"

Weave it into your day — no extra time needed:

  • Mealtimes: "banana" → "yummy banana," "eat banana."
  • Bath and play: "bubbles" → "big bubbles," "pop the bubbles."
  • Books: point and add — "cat" → "sleepy cat," "the cat is sleeping."

Tips that make it work:

  • Follow your child's lead — expand on what they are interested in right now.
  • Stay one small step ahead, not five. One or two words added is plenty.
  • Don't ask them to repeat you. Model it, smile, and move on — pressure slows children down.
  • Pause after you speak. A few seconds of quiet gives your child room to try.

When to check in

Most children stretch from single words to two-word phrases somewhere around their second year, at their own pace. If your child is not combining two words by around 24 months, has lost words they once used, or you simply feel something is off, a speech therapy check is a wise, gentle next step — early support is easy and effective.

What to watch

Watch for joining two words by around 24 months and growing variety over time. Seek a speech therapy check if your child isn't combining words by 24 months, loses words they once used, or your gut says something needs a closer look.

Try this at home

Pick one daily routine — say, mealtimes — and make it your phrase-expansion moment: repeat your child's word and add just one, like "banana" → "yummy banana."

Frequently asked

What exactly is phrase expansion?

It's a simple language strategy where you repeat what your child says and add one or two words — so "car" becomes "red car" or "car go." It models the next step in talking without asking your child to repeat after you.

Won't correcting my child make them self-conscious?

Phrase expansion isn't correcting — it's gently modelling. You never ask your child to say it again. You simply say a slightly fuller version and carry on, which keeps it warm and pressure-free, and that's exactly why it works.

How often should I do this?

Little and often beats long sessions. Sprinkle it through everyday moments — meals, bath, books, play — so your child hears longer phrases naturally many times a day, without it ever feeling like a lesson.

When should I speak to a speech therapist?

If your child isn't combining two words by around 24 months, has lost words they once used, or you simply feel unsure, book a gentle check. Early support is easy and effective, and a therapist can tailor home strategies to your child.
