Crawling Over

How to Practise Crawling Over with Your Child at Home

Support crawling-over at home with playful, safe obstacle courses — soft cushions, your own legs, and a favourite toy just beyond reach. Keep it short and joyful, follow your child's lead, and build the tummy and core strength underneath. If movement seems consistently harder than expected, a friendly developmental check reassures.

Help Your Baby Crawl Over — Easy Home Play — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Crawling over a small obstacle is a big milestone — it tells you your little one is learning to plan, push and problem-solve with their whole body.

In short

You can absolutely support crawling-over at home through playful, low-pressure practice — placing soft, safe obstacles in your child's path and inviting them to crawl across with a favourite toy on the other side. Keep sessions short, joyful and on the floor at their level. Most of all, follow your child's lead and celebrate every attempt.

Easy activities to try at home

Set up an inviting course
  • Roll a small towel or use a firm cushion as a gentle "hill" to crawl over
  • Lie down on the floor yourself and let your child crawl over your legs or tummy — they love this
  • Make a low tunnel-and-bump path using sofa cushions

Motivate the movement

  • Place a loved toy, a mirror or your own smiling face just beyond the obstacle
  • Cheer and clap as they push up and over — your voice is their biggest reward
  • Get down to their eye level so they crawl towards you

Build the strength underneath it

  • Lots of tummy-time play strengthens the arms, shoulders and core that crawling-over needs
  • Encourage reaching across the midline for toys placed to one side
  • Let them practise barefoot for better grip and feedback

Keep each go to a few minutes, stop while it is still fun, and never force a child over an obstacle. Always supervise closely and keep the surface soft and safe.

A gentle note on timing

Babies vary widely in when and how they crawl, and some skip stages altogether. If your child isn't yet attempting to move over small obstacles, that is often simply a matter of more practice and motivation. If you feel your child's overall movement seems consistently harder than expected for their age, a friendly developmental check is the reassuring next step.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any formal assessment are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — never from an activity guide alone. Our team can show you how playful occupational therapy builds the strength and motor planning behind milestones like crawling over, and the AbilityScore® gives a clear, encouraging baseline to track your child's progress.

What to watch

Watch for your child happily attempting to push up and over small soft bumps with motivation. If by their expected age they show little interest in moving across obstacles or overall movement seems consistently harder than peers, book a gentle developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Lie on the floor and let your child crawl over your legs to reach you — it's the safest, most motivating obstacle of all, and doubles as cuddle time.

Frequently asked

At what age do babies start crawling over things?

Babies vary widely. Many begin crawling between 7 and 10 months and start tackling small obstacles soon after, but some skip crawling altogether. Focus on playful practice rather than a fixed date, and seek a check if overall movement seems consistently harder than expected for your child's age.

Is it safe to let my baby crawl over cushions?

Yes, with close supervision and a soft, stable surface. Use firm cushions on a padded floor, stay within arm's reach, and never force your child over an obstacle. Stop while it is still fun.

What if my child shows no interest in crawling over things?

Lack of interest is often about motivation, not ability — try a favourite toy, a mirror or your own smiling face just beyond the bump. If concern persists, a friendly developmental check at a Pinnacle centre offers clear reassurance.
