Observing imaginative play on a home visit

On a home visit, observe whether the child uses objects to stand in for others (a block as a phone), pretends everyday actions (feeding a doll), takes on simple roles, and shares the play through looks, gestures and words. Pretend play usually emerges between 18 months and 3 years. Note — but do not diagnose — when imaginative play is largely absent past 2.5–3 years, stays repetitive, or is rarely shared, especially alongside limited speech or social connection, and suggest a friendly developmental check.

Imaginative Play: What to Observe on a Home Visit — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

A child at play tells you, in make-believe, how their mind is learning to imagine, plan and connect — so what should a home visit gently notice?

In short

During a home visit, observe whether the child uses objects to stand in for something else (a block becomes a phone), pretends to do everyday actions (feeding a doll, cooking), enjoys simple role-play, and shares this play with others through looks, gestures and words. These are signs of healthy growth in imaginative play (ICF d7, interactions and relationships). You are observing and noting patterns over time — not diagnosing. A gap that persists or shows alongside limited speech or social connection is worth a friendly developmental check.

What to watch during the visit

Imaginative (pretend) play usually blossoms between about 18 months and 3 years. Watch warmly for:

Using objects symbolically

  • Lets one thing stand for another — a stick is a spoon, a box is a car
  • Pretends an action without the real object (drinks from an empty cup)

Story and roles

  • Acts out familiar scenes — putting a doll to sleep, cooking, driving
  • Takes on a role ("I am Amma") or gives a toy feelings ("teddy is sad")

Sharing the play

  • Looks to the caregiver, offers a toy, or invites you to join
  • Copies what adults and older children do
  • Combines play with words, sounds and gestures

Gently note when pretend play is largely absent past 2½–3 years, when play stays repetitive or lining-up only, or when the child rarely shares the play with others — especially alongside limited eye contact or speech. These are reasons to suggest a check, not labels to apply at home.

When to refer

If imaginative play is not emerging by around 3 years, or several areas (play, speech, social connection) seem behind together, encourage the family to book a developmental screen. Early, playful support works best and never needs to wait for a diagnosis.

The Pinnacle way

At [Pinnacle Blooms Network](/) we begin with what the child can do, growing pretend play through warm, play-based early intervention therapy. What to watch

Whether the child lets one object stand for another, pretends familiar actions and roles, and shares the play through looks, gestures and words. Note absence of pretend play past 2.5–3 years, play that stays repetitive or lining-up only, or play rarely shared with others — especially with limited eye contact or speech.

Try this at home

Offer a doll, a cup and a spoon, and watch what the child does — does a block become a phone, does the doll get fed? Joining in for a minute often shows you more than watching alone.

Frequently asked

At what age should imaginative play appear?

Pretend play usually begins emerging around 18 months and blooms by 2.5–3 years — using objects symbolically, acting out everyday scenes and taking on simple roles. If it has not appeared by around 3 years, a developmental check is worth suggesting.

Is observing play during a home visit a diagnosis?

No. A frontline worker observes and notes patterns over time. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

What if the child only lines up toys and does not pretend?

Play that stays repetitive or lining-up only, with little pretend or sharing, is worth noting — especially alongside limited speech or eye contact. Encourage the family to book a friendly developmental screen; early, playful support helps.
