Cerebral Palsy

Signs of cerebral palsy in a 3-year-old

Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive difference in movement from early brain changes, and it responds well to early therapy. By age 3 the picture is clearer — if your child isn't walking, is stiff or floppy, favours one side, or has poor balance, assess now.

Cerebral palsy is not a verdict on a child's future — with early therapy, many children with CP walk, talk, learn and thrive.

In short

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a difference in movement and posture caused by early changes in the developing brain. It is not progressive — and it responds well to early, consistent therapy. Most CP is identified in infancy or toddlerhood, so by age 3 the picture is usually clearer. If your child's movement looks markedly different from peers, an assessment now lets therapy start at the most valuable window.

Signs worth assessing at age 3

1. Not yet walking, or walking very differently — stiff, crouched, or on toes. 2. Stiffness or floppiness in the limbs, or unusual posture. 3. Favouring one side — using one hand far more, or dragging a leg. 4. Poor balance and coordination, with frequent falls beyond the usual. 5. Persistent feeding, drooling or speech difficulty alongside motor signs.

A single trait is rarely enough; a cluster that sets your child apart from peers is the signal to assess.

The Pinnacle way

CP needs a coordinated, motor-led plan, so we move early. Our occupational therapy and therapy teams build movement, self-care and communication step by step, a clinician maps baseline and progress with the AbilityScore®, and families extend gains at home. See cerebral palsy support. This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Trusted sources

WHO ICD-11 classifies cerebral palsy (8D20); paediatric guidance stresses early identification and therapy.

Next step — if motor signs cluster, an assessment now opens the best therapy window. Book a developmental check.

Frequently asked

Is cerebral palsy progressive?

No. The underlying brain difference does not worsen over time. With early, consistent therapy, many children with CP improve their movement, communication and independence substantially.

Can a child with CP attend mainstream school?

Many do. Outcomes vary with severity, but early motor therapy, the right supports and a good school plan help a large number of children with CP participate fully.
