At What Age Should a Child Start Problem Solving?

Problem solving develops gradually across the toddler years — cause-and-effect play around 12 months, trial and error by 18 months, simple tool use by 2 years, and puzzles and step-by-step play by 3 years. Wide variation is normal; a gentle check helps if a child shows little interest in figuring things out by age 2–3.

When Do Toddlers Start Problem Solving? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

The first time your toddler turns a toy box over to reach what rolled inside, you are watching problem solving switch on — and it begins far earlier than most parents imagine.

In short

Problem solving is not a single milestone that arrives on one birthday — it unfolds steadily across the toddler years. By around 12 months a baby explores cause and effect (banging, dropping, pressing); by 18 months they use simple trial and error to get a toy; by 2 years they begin to plan ahead and use objects as tools; and by 3 years they solve simple puzzles, sort shapes and work out a task in steps. Wide variation is normal.

How problem solving grows

  • 12–15 months — finds a hidden toy, explores how things work, pulls a string to get an object.
  • 16–18 months — stacks two to three blocks, fits simple shapes, tries one approach then another.
  • 19–24 months — uses a tool (a stool to reach), completes a simple inset puzzle, imitates problem solving they have seen.
  • 24–36 months — sorts by colour or shape, completes 3–4 piece puzzles, follows two-step requests, plans simple pretend play.

This is cognitive development working hand in hand with fine motor and language. Children learn it by doing — so the messy, repetitive exploration is the learning.

When to check in

If by 2 years your child shows little interest in figuring things out, does not search for a hidden toy, or by 3 years struggles with simple puzzles or two-step play, a gentle developmental check is worthwhile — not a cause for alarm. A toddler screen such as the M-CHAT-R/F also reassures or flags wider areas alongside problem solving.

What to watch

Worth a gentle developmental check if by 2 years your child shows little interest in figuring things out or won't search for a hidden toy, or by 3 years struggles with simple puzzles or two-step play. Any loss of previously acquired skills warrants prompt review rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Offer 'just-hard-enough' play — hide a favourite toy under a cloth, give a shape sorter, or put a treat in a clear container with a loose lid. Pause before helping; the few seconds of struggle is where problem solving is learnt.

Frequently asked

At what age do toddlers start solving problems?

It begins around 12 months with cause-and-effect play and grows steadily — trial and error by 18 months, simple tool use by 2 years, and puzzles and step-by-step tasks by 3 years. Wide variation between children is completely normal.

How can I help my toddler develop problem-solving skills?

Offer play that is just challenging enough — shape sorters, hidden-toy games, simple puzzles and containers with lids. Pause before stepping in so your child gets a chance to work it out themselves, which is exactly how the skill is learnt.

When should I be concerned about my child's problem solving?

Consider a gentle developmental check if by 2 years your child shows little interest in figuring things out or won't look for a hidden toy, or by 3 years cannot manage simple puzzles or two-step play. Any loss of skills should be reviewed promptly.
