Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism

At what age is the ISAA used for a child?

The Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism (ISAA) is intended for children from about 3 years of age onwards, with the standard range covering roughly 3 to 22 years. It is a clinician-administered tool used once a child is old enough for its behavioural observations to be meaningful, and is not designed for newborns or infants. For children under 3, concerns are followed through general developmental observation rather than the ISAA.

In short

The Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism (ISAA) is intended for children from about 3 years of age onwards (and into adulthood), with the standard guidance covering roughly 3 to 22 years. It is a clinician-administered tool used to help assess autism once a child is old enough for its observations to be meaningful — it is not designed for newborns or very young infants. For children under 3, developmental concerns are followed through general developmental observation and milestone review rather than the ISAA.

A little more about the ISAA and its age range

The ISAA is a structured rating scale developed in India to support the assessment of autism across childhood and into early adulthood. Because many of the behaviours it observes — patterns in social interaction, communication, play and behaviour — become clearer as a child grows, the scale is applied from around the third year. This is why, if you have a worry about a baby or toddler under 3, the right first step is a general developmental check rather than a specific autism scale: a clinician can watch how your child is communicating, playing and connecting, and decide together with you when a tool like the ISAA becomes the right fit.

When a review makes sense

If you notice your child is not making eye contact, not responding to their name, showing little back-and-forth babble or gesture, or seeming slower than peers in social and communication milestones, a developmental review is worthwhile at any age — the review itself decides which assessments suit your child's stage. Seeking advice early is never premature; it simply opens the door to the right kind of support.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. Our clinicians choose the right tools for your child's age and stage, including the ISAA where appropriate, and shape support that may draw on autism therapy and related developmental help.

Trusted sources

Next step — If you have any questions about your child's social or communication development, book a developmental review and let our clinicians decide which assessments fit your child best.

What to watch

Not responding to their name, limited eye contact, little back-and-forth babble or gesture, or seeming slower than peers in social and communication milestones — at any age these are worth a gentle developmental review.

Try this at home

Build social back-and-forth through everyday play — name objects, pause and wait for your child to respond, and respond warmly to every sound, gesture or glance they offer.

Frequently asked

From what age can the ISAA be used?

The ISAA is generally intended for children from about 3 years of age onwards, with the standard guidance covering roughly 3 to 22 years. It is not designed for newborns or infants under 3.

Why isn't the ISAA used for babies under 3?

Many of the behaviours the ISAA observes — patterns in social interaction, communication, play and behaviour — become clearer as a child grows. For younger children, concerns are followed through general developmental observation and milestone review instead.

What should I do if I have concerns about my baby or toddler?

Seek a general developmental review at any age. A clinician will watch how your child communicates, plays and connects, and decide together with you which assessments suit your child's stage.
