A child with a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) in India is recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, which lists SLD as a benchmark disability. With a valid disability certificate (issued when assessed impairment is 40% or more), your child may be entitled to inclusive education and exam accommodations, reservation in education and government jobs, scholarships, and a UDID card — alongside school-level support that does not require any certificate at all. What your child may be entitled to

Education (the most immediate)

• Exam accommodations under CBSE/ICSE/State boards and national exams — extra time (commonly 25%), a scribe or reader, use of a calculator or laptop, exemption from a third language, and alternative question formats, on production of a valid SLD certificate.
• Inclusive education under the RPwD Act — schools cannot deny admission, and reasonable accommodations must be made within the classroom.
• Reservation in higher education institutions and certain government employment within the benchmark-disability quota.

Financial & identity support

• A UDID (Unique Disability ID) card, which simplifies access to schemes nationwide.
• Scholarships for students with disabilities through central and state schemes.

The key point on certification

• SLD is certified by a designated medical authority (typically a clinical psychologist plus paediatrician/medical board), usually with standardised assessment from around age 8 onwards, when the gap between ability and achievement is reliably measurable.
• Crucially, school-based remedial support and accommodations do not wait for a certificate — they can begin the moment a learning difference is noticed.
