How the certificate works

Under the RPwD Act 2016, SLD is one of the 21 recognised disabilities, and benchmark disability certification is governed by Gazette guidelines.

The usual pathway

• Step 1 — Diagnosis. A qualified clinical team (paediatrician, clinical psychologist and, where relevant, special educator) confirms SLD through structured developmental and educational assessment. This is distinct from the certificate itself.
• Step 2 — Certification. You apply to a designated government hospital or medical board notified for SLD certification in your state. A specified panel evaluates your child and issues the certificate with a percentage of disability.
• Step 3 — Benefits. With the certificate (and often a UDID — Unique Disability ID — card), your child can access exam accommodations such as extra time and a scribe, reservation provisions, and educational support under inclusive-education frameworks.
