- Early support helps the most. The earlier a child receives playful, communication-rich therapy, the more room there is for spoken language to develop.
- Communication comes before words. Pointing, eye contact, gestures, sharing attention and taking turns are the foundations that spoken language is built upon — therapy nurtures these first.
- Speech may arrive on its own timeline. Some children begin with single words later than expected, then make rapid gains; others build language gradually over years.
- Every route to communication counts. When speech is slow to come, tools such as picture exchange, sign or speech-generating devices (often called AAC) give a child a voice now — and, importantly, these supports encourage talking rather than replace it.
- It is rarely "now or never". Language can continue to develop through childhood; a quieter start does not close the door.
The goal is always connection: a child who can make their needs, ideas and feelings understood — by whatever means works for them — is a child who is communicating.
When to seek a check
If your child is not babbling by around 12 months, not using single words by 16 months, not joining two words by around 2 years, or seems to be losing words or social skills they once had, a developmental check is worthwhile.
