For Friends & Classmates

Why does my friend not talk very much?

A friend may talk less for many reasons — finding words tricky, feeling shy, or communicating in other ways like gestures or pictures — and none mean they don't like you. The kindest help is patience, time and inclusion. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Why does my friend not talk very much? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Some friends share lots of words, and some share their hearts in quieter ways — both are wonderful kinds of friends to have.

In short

Your friend might not talk very much for lots of different reasons — and none of them mean your friend doesn't like you. Some people find talking a bit tricky, some feel shy or need more time to find their words, and some say what they feel with a smile, a wave or by playing beside you instead. The kindest thing you can do is keep being a warm, patient friend.

Why some friends are quieter

Everyone's brain learns and works in its own special way. Here are some gentle reasons a friend might be quiet:
  • Words can be hard work for some people. Their mouth or their thoughts might need extra time to turn feelings into talking — so they say less, but they still understand and care.
  • They might feel shy or nervous in a big group or a noisy room, and feel happier talking when it's calm and quiet.
  • They might talk in other ways — pointing, drawing, nodding, using a picture board or a special talking device. All of these are real talking too!
  • They might just like listening, and that's okay. Quiet friends are often very good at noticing how you feel.

How you can be a great friend

  • Invite, don't push. Ask if they'd like to play — and it's fine if they answer with a nod or a smile.
  • Give them time. Count slowly in your head after you ask something, so they have space to answer.
  • Watch their face and hands. A grin or a thumbs-up tells you lots without words.
  • Include them. Sitting together, sharing crayons, or playing side by side is real friendship.
  • Be kind if others tease. Sticking up for your friend is the bravest, best thing of all.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app or a guess. If a grown-up wonders why a child finds talking tricky, kind helpers called speech therapists can help words grow through speech therapy. Grown-ups can learn how a child's profile is understood through the AbilityScore®, or start by exploring our [main page](/).

Trusted sources

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association explains that children develop talking at different paces and may use gestures or devices to communicate. Healthychildren.org (American Academy of Pediatrics) reminds us that every child grows in their own way and that kindness and patience help all friendships flourish.

Next step — Tell a trusted grown-up — a parent or teacher — that you'd love to keep being a kind friend, and ask how you can help your friend feel happy and included.

What to watch

Notice how your friend likes to share — with a smile, a wave, pictures or a device — and follow their lead; if they seem upset or left out, kindly tell a trusted grown-up so they can help.

Try this at home

After you ask your friend something, count slowly to five in your head — giving quiet friends extra time to answer makes talking feel much easier.

Frequently asked

Does it mean my friend doesn't like me if they don't talk much?

Not at all. Quiet friends often care very much — they may just show it with a smile, a nod or by playing beside you instead of with lots of words.

How can I help my friend talk more?

You don't need to make them talk. Give them time to answer, watch their face and hands, invite them to play, and let them join in however feels comfy for them.

My friend uses pictures or a device to talk. Is that real talking?

Yes! Pointing, picture boards and talking devices are all real ways of communicating, and using them means your friend is sharing their thoughts with you.
