For Children

Why do people say I have special needs?

Having special needs simply means a child may need a little extra help or a different way of doing some things — it does not mean anything is wrong with them. It is a kind way for grown-ups to give the right support, and every child has strengths too. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Having special needs just means your brain and body learn or work in their own special way — and that everyone wants to help you shine.

In short

When people say you have special needs, it simply means you might need a little extra help, a bit more time, or a different way of doing some things — and that is completely okay. It does not mean anything is wrong with you. Lots of children learn, talk, move, play or feel things in their own way, and the grown-ups around you use that phrase so they can give you the right kind of help and support.

What it really means

  • Everyone is different. Some people need glasses to see better, some need a ramp instead of stairs, and some need a special way to learn or talk. "Special needs" is just a kind way of saying you may need some extra support.
  • It is about helping, not fixing. The grown-ups — your parents, teachers and therapists — use this word so they can make things easier and more fun for you, in the way that works best for you.
  • You have strengths too. Needing help with some things does not change all the brilliant things you can do. Everybody is good at some things and finds other things tricky.
  • You are not alone. Many, many children have special needs, and there are kind people whose whole job is to help children like you grow, learn and feel happy.

If you ever feel worried or confused about it, it is a wonderful idea to ask a grown-up you trust. There is no silly question — they would love to explain it to you.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app, a website, or what other people guess. Friendly therapists first get to know you — what you enjoy, what comes easily, and what feels tricky — through a clinician-led understanding of your strengths, and then build fun, gentle support such as therapy that helps children learn and grow. You can also learn more about support for children and the many ways help is shaped around each child.

Try this at home

If a word about you feels confusing, ask a grown-up you trust: 'Can you tell me what that means?' There are no silly questions, and asking helps you feel calmer and braver.

Frequently asked

Does having special needs mean something is wrong with me?

No, not at all. It simply means you might need a little extra help, more time, or a different way of doing some things. Everyone is different, and lots of children need support in their own way.

Will I always have special needs?

Every child grows and changes. With the right help, many children find things get easier over time. The grown-ups and therapists around you are there to help you learn and grow at your own pace.

Who can I ask if I feel confused about it?

A grown-up you trust — like a parent, teacher or therapist — would be very happy to explain it to you. Asking questions is a brave and brilliant thing to do.
