Specific Learning Disability

ICHI interventions for Specific Learning Disability in young children

ICHI classifies interventions by Target, Action and Means, so there is no single SLD code. For developmental learning disorder (ICD-11 6A03), applicable ICHI families are assessment of learning functions, literacy/numeracy skills training, family and educator education and counselling, and environmental/educational accommodations. In children under ~6–8 years the emphasis is screening, monitoring and pre-literacy support rather than a formal label.

A clinician's first question is rarely "what label" — it is "what intervention, and under which classification". ICHI gives that vocabulary; here is how it maps to specific learning disability in young children.

In short

The WHO International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI) describes interventions by Target, Action and Means rather than by diagnosis, so there is no single "SLD code". For a young child whose profile suggests developmental learning disorder (ICD-11 6A03), the applicable ICHI interventions cluster around assessment of learning functions, training in literacy and numeracy skills, education and counselling for the family, and environmental/educational accommodations. In children under roughly 6–8 years, the emphasis is screening, monitoring and pre-literacy support — a formal SLD label is not yet meaningful, so interventions are framed around emerging foundational skills.

Mapping ICHI to the SLD pathway

ICHI interventions are built combinatorially, so a clinician selects components rather than one code. Practically, the relevant families for a young child are:
  • Assessment interventions — structured evaluation of cognitive, language, attention and pre-academic functions to establish a functional baseline.
  • Training and therapy interventions — targeting reading-readiness, phonological awareness, written-expression precursors, and numeracy foundations; delivered through structured, multisensory educational therapy.
  • Education and counselling interventions — directed at parents and educators on supportive strategies and the home learning environment.
  • Environmental/assistive interventions — accommodations in the learning setting and, where appropriate, assistive learning tools.

Because SLD (6A03) is reliably distinguished only once formal instruction begins (typically from ~6–8 years), in younger children these interventions are anchored to the ICF model of functioning and to a watch-and-support stance: build foundational skills, monitor trajectory, and reassess as academic demands emerge rather than affixing a premature diagnosis.

When to escalate

Refer for structured developmental and educational assessment when a young child shows persistent difficulty with language, phonological awareness, letter/number recognition or sustained attention that is out of step with peers and not explained by sensory, environmental or instructional factors. Persistent parental or teacher concern is itself a valid trigger.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from a code list or an online tool. What to watch

Persistent difficulty with language, phonological awareness, letter or number recognition, or sustained attention that is out of step with peers and not explained by sensory, environmental or instructional factors — alongside persistent parent or teacher concern.

Try this at home

Before formal schooling, focus on rich shared reading, rhyme and sound games, and playful counting rather than drilling academics — these build the phonological and numeracy foundations that later predict reading and maths readiness.

Frequently asked

Is there a single ICHI code for specific learning disability?

No. ICHI describes interventions by Target, Action and Means, so an intervention is built from components rather than mapped to a diagnosis. For a child whose profile suggests developmental learning disorder (ICD-11 6A03), clinicians select assessment, skills-training, education/counselling and environmental-accommodation interventions as needed.

At what age can specific learning disability be reliably identified?

SLD is reliably distinguished only once formal instruction begins, typically from around 6–8 years, because it is defined by academic attainment well below expectation. In younger children the appropriate stance is screening, foundational-skills support and monitoring rather than a formal label.

What interventions help a young child before any SLD label applies?

Structured pre-literacy and numeracy support — phonological awareness, letter and number familiarity, language enrichment and attention-building — delivered through play and shared reading, with parent and educator coaching and review as academic demands increase.
