Non-Verbal / Minimally Verbal Presentation

Where to start for a non-verbal or minimally verbal child

To get help for a non-verbal or minimally verbal child, start with a developmental and speech-language assessment, rule out hearing differences, and begin speech therapy that uses gestures, pictures and AAC as bridges to spoken words, with parent coaching at home. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Where to start for a non-verbal or minimally verbal child — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When your child has few or no words yet, the right first step is gentle, expert guidance — and there is a clear path from worry to a plan.

In short

Start with a developmental and speech-language assessment at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, where a qualified clinician understands how your child communicates today and builds a plan around their strengths. Being non-verbal or minimally verbal does not mean a child cannot communicate — it means we find the route that works for them, from gestures and pictures to speech-generating tools, while we nurture spoken language. Early, joyful support helps most, so the best time to begin is now.

Your first steps

1. Book a developmental check. A clinician looks at communication, play, social connection, hearing and overall development — not just speech — to understand the whole picture. 2. Ask for a hearing review. Always rule out hearing first, as undetected hearing differences can hold back spoken language. 3. Begin speech and language therapy. Therapy builds understanding (what your child takes in) alongside expression — using gestures, signs, pictures and AAC (augmented and alternative communication, including picture boards or speech-generating devices) as bridges to words, never replacements for them. 4. Add occupational therapy if sensory or play needs are present, so your child is calm, regulated and ready to connect. 5. Learn parent-led strategies. You are with your child every day — the team coaches you to model language, follow your child's lead and respond to every attempt to communicate.

Giving a child a way to be understood often reduces frustration and increases speech attempts — communication and connection come first, and words tend to follow.

When to seek a check

If your child is well past the age when single words and simple phrases usually appear, loses words they once had, or rarely uses gestures, pointing or eye contact to share with you, a developmental check is worthwhile. There is no need to "wait and see" — an early review tells apart a child who simply needs more time from one who will benefit from targeted support now.

What to watch

Watch if your child is well past the usual age for first words or simple phrases, loses words once used, or rarely uses gestures, pointing or eye contact to share with you.

Try this at home

Respond warmly to every attempt your child makes to communicate — a point, a sound, a look — and name it back simply, so they learn that communicating gets a joyful response.

Frequently asked

Does being non-verbal mean my child will never speak?

No. Being non-verbal or minimally verbal describes where your child is now, not where they will always be. Many children develop spoken language with the right support, and tools like pictures or speech devices often help speech emerge rather than replace it.

Will using picture cards or a communication device stop my child from talking?

No — the opposite is usually true. Giving a child a reliable way to be understood reduces frustration and often increases attempts at speech. AAC tools are bridges to words, used alongside speech therapy, never instead of it.

Should I wait and see if words come on their own?

It is best not to simply wait. An early developmental and hearing check can tell apart a child who needs more time from one who will benefit from targeted support now, and early help tends to work best.
