For a baby born prematurely, the single most important thing to know is that you should track milestones by corrected age — your baby's age counted from their due date, not their birth date — until around two years. What to watch at 3–6 months (corrected age)

• Settling and softening — by around 3–4 months corrected, babies usually relax out of newborn stiffness. Persistent strong stiffness, arching, or a body that always feels floppy and "melts" is worth raising.
• Hands and midline — bringing hands together, opening fists, reaching toward toys. A hand that stays tightly fisted, or a strong, consistent preference for one hand this early, deserves review.
• Head control — by around 4 months corrected, head steadiness when held upright is emerging.
• Looking and listening — following your face, turning toward your voice, startling to sound. If your baby doesn't seem to fix on faces or respond to sound, mention it.
• Social warmth — smiling back, cooing, brightening when you appear, by around 6 weeks to 3 months corrected.
