Visual Impairment

Worrying about vision in your 12–18 month old

By 12–18 months most toddlers make eye contact, follow moving objects, reach accurately and point. Worry — and seek a prompt check — if your child consistently avoids eye contact, holds things very close, has wandering or wobbling eyes, bumps into things, or shows little interest in faces and pictures. These are observations to act on, not a diagnosis; only a Pinnacle clinician can assess vision properly, never an online form.

Worrying about vision in your 12–18 month old
Vision worries at 12–18 months: when to check — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

If your little one isn't quite meeting your eyes, following your face, or reaching for the toys they love, your wish to understand their vision is a deeply caring one.

In short

By 12 to 18 months, most toddlers make warm eye contact, follow moving objects across the room, reach accurately for small things, point at what interests them, and recognise familiar faces from a distance. Visual Impairment (ICD-11 9D90) is worth a prompt check if your child consistently doesn't make eye contact, holds objects very close, has eyes that wander, drift or jiggle, bumps into things they should see, or shows no interest in pictures or distant people. These are observations that deserve a professional look — they are not a diagnosis, and vision concerns at this age are very treatable when caught early.

Signs worth a closer look

At 12–18 months, gently observe whether your toddler:
  • Doesn't make or hold eye contact, or doesn't smile back when you smile at them across the room
  • Holds toys, books or your phone unusually close to the face
  • Has eyes that turn in or out, wander, or wobble (steady misalignment after 4–6 months needs review)
  • Tilts the head or covers one eye to look at things
  • Doesn't follow moving objects or reach accurately for what they want
  • Bumps into furniture more than expected, or is wary in new or dim spaces
  • Shows little interest in faces, pictures or distant pointing
  • Has cloudy, white or persistently watery eyes, or unusual sensitivity to light

A single sign on an off day is rarely cause for alarm. A persistent pattern, or any concern about how the eyes look or move, is your cue to act.

Why early checks matter

A child's visual system develops rapidly in these months, and the brain learns to see by using both eyes together. Conditions such as squint, refractive error or a lazy eye respond far better the earlier they are addressed. Vision difficulties can also be mistaken for delays in play, communication or movement — so a clear eye assessment helps everyone understand the whole picture. Because a baby can't tell us what they can or can't see, your everyday observations are genuinely valuable clinical clues.

When to seek a check

Arrange a vision and developmental check promptly if signs persist over a few weeks, if the eyes look or move unusually at any time, or simply if your instinct says something isn't right. A red, painful eye, sudden change, or a white reflection in photographs deserves same-week medical attention.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online form or a checklist. Our team looks at your child's vision alongside how they play, move and connect, then builds a warm, practical plan around their strengths. Where vision affects everyday learning and interaction, gentle occupational therapy and family coaching help your toddler explore their world with confidence.

Next step — If any of these signs feel familiar, the kindest move is a calm professional check. Book a developmental and vision check with a Pinnacle clinician.

What to watch

Watch for a persistent pattern over a few weeks: no eye contact, holding toys very close, eyes that turn, wander or wobble, head tilting or covering one eye, bumping into things, or little interest in faces and pictures. Any unusual look or movement of the eyes — or a white reflection in photos — deserves a same-week eye check.

Try this at home

Play simple looking games at different distances — roll a brightly coloured ball, peek-a-boo across the room, point at birds outside — and quietly notice whether your toddler tracks, reaches and points with both eyes working together. Jot down anything that feels off to share with your clinician.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my 1-year-old's eyes to cross sometimes?

Occasional brief crossing in early infancy can be normal, but by around 4–6 months the eyes should work together steadily. Any constant or frequent turning, drifting or wobbling at 12–18 months deserves a prompt eye check — it is very treatable when caught early.

My toddler holds books and toys very close to their face. Should I worry?

Holding objects unusually close can simply be curiosity, but if it is consistent it can be a clue to a refractive error or other vision difficulty. It is worth mentioning at a vision and developmental check so a clinician can look closely.

Could vision problems be mistaken for a developmental delay?

Yes. Because seeing well underpins play, reaching, pointing and connecting, undetected vision difficulties can look like delays in communication or movement. A clear eye assessment helps a clinician understand your child's whole picture.

Who should check my toddler's vision?

Start with a developmental and vision check. At Pinnacle Blooms Network, clinicians assess vision alongside play, movement and communication, and refer for specialist eye care where needed. Any red, painful eye or sudden change needs same-week medical attention.
