Communication

When should I worry about my child's communication development?

Some variation in how children learn to talk is completely normal. Seek a developmental check if your child isn't babbling by 12 months, has no clear words by 16–18 months, isn't joining two words by 2 years, is very hard to understand by 3, or loses speech or social skills. Always check hearing first. This isn't a diagnosis — it means early, playful support is wise now, because it works best the earlier it begins.

Every child finds their voice on their own timeline — and knowing the gentle signposts means you can love and support, never just worry.

In short

Most children move through babbling, first words and short sentences at their own pace, and a little variation is completely normal. The time to seek a developmental check is when your child isn't babbling by around 12 months, has no clear words by 16–18 months, isn't joining two words by 2 years, is very hard to understand by 3, or loses speech or social skills they once had. This isn't a diagnosis — it simply means a clinician's gentle look is wise now, because early communication support works beautifully.

Gentle signposts by age

Communication is far more than talking — it's eye contact, gestures, listening and turn-taking too. These are reasons to ask, not reasons to panic:
  • By 9–12 months — little or no babbling ("bababa", "dada"), no gestures like waving or pointing, and not responding to their name or familiar sounds.
  • By 16–18 months — no clear single words, not following simple instructions, or little interest in copying sounds and words.
  • By 2 years — fewer than around 50 words, not putting two words together ("more milk", "daddy go"), or relying only on pointing and grunting.
  • By 3 years — speech that is very hard for family to understand, not using short sentences, or limited back-and-forth conversation.
  • At any age — losing words, babble or social skills your child once had. A sudden loss always deserves a prompt review.

Also notice whether your child understands you — pointing to named objects, following "give me the cup" — as comprehension matters as much as speaking.

When to act

If any of these signposts fit your child, arrange a developmental check now rather than waiting to "see if they catch up". Hearing is checked first, because even mild glue ear can quietly slow speech. Trust your instinct — what you notice every day is valuable clinical information, and early support is gentle, playful and effective.

What to watch

Seek a check if there's no babbling by 12 months, no clear words by 16–18 months, no two-word phrases by 2 years, speech very hard to understand by 3 years, or any loss of words or social skills once had. Notice understanding too — following simple instructions and pointing to named objects. Always check hearing first.

Try this at home

Talk through your day out loud — narrate bath time, cooking and walks, pause to let your child respond, and follow their lead by naming whatever they look at. These small back-and-forth moments build communication powerfully.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my 2-year-old to only say a few words?

Many 2-year-olds are still building vocabulary, but by this age most use around 50 words and start joining two words together, like "more milk". If your child uses very few words or relies only on pointing and grunting, a gentle developmental check is wise — it's not a diagnosis, just an early, helpful look.

My child understands everything but doesn't talk much. Should I worry?

Strong understanding is a reassuring sign, and some children are slower to speak than to comprehend. Still, if expressive words are well behind the signposts for their age, a clinician's review and a hearing check help you understand why and offer simple, playful support.

Could a hearing problem be affecting my child's speech?

Yes — even mild, temporary hearing loss from glue ear can quietly slow speech and language. That's why hearing is always checked first when communication is delayed. It's a simple, painless test and an important first step.

Will waiting a bit hurt if I'm not sure?

Children do develop at different paces, but the brain is most adaptable in the early years, so early support works best. Seeking a check costs little and clarifies a lot — it's far better than waiting and wondering.
