Watching your toddler clamber, chase and tumble isn't just fun — it's the body learning to be brave.

In short

Most children begin true physical play — running, climbing, kicking and chasing — between 12 and 36 months. Walking steadies around 12–15 months, running and climbing stairs emerge by 18–24 months, and by 3 years many can kick a ball, jump with both feet and ride a push-along toy. Every child follows their own rhythm, so a range of a few months on either side is perfectly normal.

How physical play unfolds

12–18 months — walks confidently, pulls and pushes toys, stoops to pick things up, enjoys being chased.

18–24 months — runs (with the odd tumble), climbs onto low furniture, walks up steps with help, throws a ball.

24–36 months — kicks a ball forward, jumps with both feet off the floor, climbs play equipment, pedals or scoots, plays alongside other children.

The science

Physical play (ICF activity domain d7) builds gross-motor strength, balance and coordination while wiring spatial awareness, confidence and early social turn-taking. Active, joyful movement is one of the strongest, lowest-cost supports for healthy toddler development — which is why bodies like the WHO and AAP recommend several hours of varied active play across a toddler's day.

What to watch

Gentle watch-points: not walking by 18 months, not running or climbing by 24 months, or any loss of movement skills already gained — these are worth a developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Make a daily 'movement game' — chase, soft-ball kicking, or climbing cushions. Ten cheerful minutes builds balance, strength and confidence far better than any screen.

Frequently asked

At what age do toddlers start running?

Most children begin running — often with a few tumbles — between 18 and 24 months, once walking is well established. By around 2 years it usually looks steadier.

When can a child kick or throw a ball?

Many toddlers throw a ball by around 18 months and can kick a ball forward by about 2 years, with jumping on both feet emerging by 3 years.

Is it normal for my toddler to play physically alone?

Yes. Toddlers often play near other children rather than with them — this 'parallel play' is normal and gradually becomes more shared by age 3.

When should I be concerned about my child's movement?

If your child isn't walking by 18 months, not running or climbing by 24 months, or loses skills they once had, a developmental check is wise — not a reason to panic.
