long term memory

When Do Children Develop Long-Term Memory?

Long-term memory builds gradually from infancy. Toddlers aged 12–36 months already store faces, routines, songs and events over days and weeks, and by 2–3 years recall things over months — though earliest years are rarely remembered later (normal childhood amnesia).

Your toddler remembering where you hid their favourite toy last week? That's long-term memory quietly taking root.

In short

Long-term memory isn't a skill that switches on at one age — it builds gradually from infancy. Toddlers between 12 and 36 months already store and recall events, faces, songs and routines over days and weeks. By around 2 to 3 years, children begin holding onto memories that can last for months, though the very earliest years are rarely recalled into adulthood (a normal pattern called childhood amnesia).

The science of remembering

In the toddler years, long-term memory grows alongside language and daily routine:
  • 12–18 months — recognises familiar people, anticipates regular routines (bath, mealtime), recalls where objects are kept.
  • 18–24 months — remembers and imitates actions seen days earlier; recalls favourite rhymes and books.
  • 24–36 months — begins recounting past events ("we went park!"), recognises photos, follows multi-step familiar sequences.

This remembering is woven into ICF activity & participation around learning and applying knowledge (d1). Repetition, warm interaction and consistent routines are what help these memories stick.

When to look closer

Every child consolidates memory at their own pace. Gently check in with a developmental professional if, by around 2.5–3 years, your child shows little recognition of familiar people or daily routines, or seems to lose words and skills they once had.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — never from an online read. If memory and learning feel out of step, our child development screening gives a warm, structured starting point, with occupational therapy support where helpful.

What to watch

Gently check in if, by around 2.5–3 years, your child shows little recognition of familiar people or daily routines, or appears to lose words and skills once mastered.

Try this at home

Build memory through repetition: revisit the same bedtime story, sing familiar rhymes daily, and chat about what you did earlier — 'remember the dog at the park?' — to help recall grow.

Frequently asked

At what age do children form long-term memories?

Long-term memory builds gradually from infancy. Toddlers from 12 months store routines, faces and events over days and weeks, and by 2–3 years can hold memories lasting months.

Why don't we remember being a baby?

This is called childhood amnesia and is completely normal. The brain regions and language that help us store retrievable autobiographical memories are still maturing in the earliest years, so most adults recall little before age 3–4.

How can I help my toddler's memory develop?

Repetition and warm routines work best — re-read favourite books, sing the same rhymes, keep consistent daily rhythms, and talk together about recent events to strengthen recall.

When should I seek advice about my child's memory?

Speak to a developmental professional if, by around 2.5–3 years, your child rarely recognises familiar people or routines, or seems to lose words and skills once gained.
