When Do Children Usually Develop Foot Control?

Children develop foot control across the toddler years: standing and cruising near 12 months, independent walking by 12–18 months, kicking a ball around 18–24 months, and jumping, running and brief one-foot balance by 2–3 years. Each child follows their own pace.

Those first determined steps and tiny kicks are your toddler learning to command their own feet — one wobble at a time.

In short

Most children begin gaining real foot control across the toddler years (roughly 12–36 months). They stand and cruise around furniture near 12 months, walk independently by about 12–18 months, kick a ball around 18–24 months, and begin to jump, run more steadily and balance briefly on one foot by 2–3 years. Every child follows their own timeline, and a few months either way is usually perfectly typical.

What this looks like, month by month

  • 12–15 months — pulls to stand, cruises along furniture, takes first independent steps with feet wide apart for balance.
  • 15–18 months — walks confidently, begins to walk up stairs holding a hand, squats to pick up a toy.
  • 18–24 months — kicks a large ball forward, walks backward a little, runs (still a bit stiffly).
  • 24–36 months — jumps with both feet, balances briefly on one foot, climbs and walks up stairs alternating feet with support.

The science

Foot control sits within ICF d4 (Mobility) and grows as muscle strength, balance and coordination mature together. Tummy time, barefoot play on safe surfaces, and plenty of floor freedom all help these foot and leg skills develop naturally. Tools like the ASQ-3 help frontline workers and families gently track progress.

What to watch

Seek a developmental check if your child is not bearing weight on their feet by 12 months, not walking independently by 18 months, persistently walks only on tiptoes, or seems to lose a skill they once had.

Try this at home

Give plenty of barefoot floor and outdoor play on safe surfaces — feeling the ground helps toddlers build balance and strengthen the foot and leg muscles that drive control.

Frequently asked

At what age do toddlers start walking on their own?

Most children take their first independent steps between 12 and 18 months. A few weeks either side is usually typical, but it's worth a friendly check if your child isn't walking by 18 months.

When can my child kick a ball?

Many toddlers can kick a large ball forward by about 18–24 months, once their balance and leg coordination have matured enough to stand on one foot for a moment.

Should I worry if my toddler walks on tiptoes?

Occasional tiptoe walking is common as toddlers experiment. If it's persistent, the only way they walk, or paired with stiffness, a developmental screen can offer reassurance or guidance.
