coordination

When do children usually develop coordination?

Coordination develops across the toddler years (12–36 months): walking and scribbling by 12–18 months, running and ball play by 18–24 months, and jumping, stacking and climbing by 24–36 months. The range is wide, and play is the best teacher. Only a clinician can assess any concern.

When Do Toddlers Develop Coordination? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Watching your little one stack a block, climb a step, or chase a ball — that's coordination blossoming, one playful try at a time.

In short

Coordination develops steadily across the toddler years (roughly 12–36 months) as your child learns to combine balance, vision, and muscle control. Expect walking and first scribbles around 12–18 months, running and ball play around 18–24 months, and jumping, stacking, and simple climbing by 24–36 months. There is a wide, healthy range — children practise at their own pace.

How coordination usually unfolds

12–18 months — walks alone, begins to stoop and stand, stacks two blocks, holds a crayon and scribbles, feeds with fingers.

18–24 months — runs (a little stiffly), kicks or throws a ball, walks up steps with help, builds a small tower, turns book pages.

24–36 months — jumps with both feet, climbs on furniture, pedals a tricycle, stacks 6+ blocks, copies a line or circle, and manages a spoon more neatly.

The science

Coordination (ICF d4 — Mobility) blends gross-motor balance with fine-motor hand control and visual guidance. Each skill builds on the last as the brain's motor pathways strengthen through repetition. This is why everyday play — not drills — is the best teacher: every wobble and retry wires the connections.

The Pinnacle way

At Pinnacle Blooms Network, a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — never from an online list. If you'd like reassurance about your child's coordination, our team can guide a gentle occupational therapy screen and explain how the AbilityScore® works.

What to watch

Seek a screen if your child isn't walking by 18 months, frequently falls or seems very stiff or floppy, can't pick up small objects by 18 months, or loses a skill they once had.

Try this at home

Set up safe 'obstacle play' at home — cushions to climb, a low step to manage, a soft ball to roll and kick. Ten minutes of free play builds balance and hand control better than any drill.

Frequently asked

At what age should my toddler be able to run?

Most children begin running, a little stiffly at first, between 18 and 24 months, becoming smoother by age three. A wide range is normal.

Is it normal for my toddler to be clumsy?

Yes — toddlers fall and fumble often as their balance and hand control are still developing. Persistent, marked clumsiness beyond their peers is worth a gentle screen.

When should I worry about coordination delays?

Consider a screen if your child isn't walking by 18 months, seems very stiff or floppy, struggles to grasp small objects, or loses a skill they had before. A clinician can reassure or guide you.
