cohesion

When do children usually develop cohesion?

Cohesion — linking words and ideas into a little narrative — only begins to form in toddlerhood (12–36 months) through single words, two-word combinations and early connectors like 'and'. True story cohesion mostly develops between ages 3 and 5, so the toddler years are for building foundations, not finished stories.

Big stories from little people don't arrive all at once — first come the words, then the way those words start to hold together.

In short

Cohesion — the skill of linking words, ideas and events so a little narrative "hangs together" — is only just beginning in the toddler years (roughly 12–36 months). Toddlers build the foundations: single words, then two-word combinations, then early connectors like and and then. True story cohesion, where a child links several events in sequence, mostly blooms between ages 3 and 5. So in toddlerhood we nurture the building blocks, not finished stories.

The science

Cohesion grows on the back of vocabulary and sentence-building. A typical path looks like:
  • 12–18 months — first single words, naming familiar people and objects.
  • 18–24 months — two-word combinations ("more milk", "daddy go") — the seed of linking ideas.
  • 24–36 months — short phrases joined with simple connectors like and; beginning to recount one familiar event.
  • 3–5 years (beyond the toddler band) — linking two or three events into a small, ordered story.

Every child travels this path at their own pace. Wide, gentle variation is normal in these early years.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — never from an online read or a worry. If you'd like to understand your child's language journey, explore cohesion, see how speech therapy supports early narrative skills, and learn what the AbilityScore® measures.

What to watch

Watch for the building blocks: single words by around 18 months and two-word combinations by around 24 months. If words aren't combining by 24 months, a friendly developmental check is worthwhile — not a cause for alarm.

Try this at home

Narrate your day aloud as you go — 'First we wash hands, then we eat.' Hearing 'first' and 'then' gives your toddler the connector words that later let stories hang together.

Frequently asked

Should my 2-year-old be telling stories yet?

No — at 2, most children are combining two words ('more milk') and naming things. Linking several events into a small story usually comes later, between ages 3 and 5. The toddler years build the words and phrases that stories are later made from.

What words signal cohesion is starting?

Little connectors like 'and' and 'then' are the first signs. When a toddler says 'mummy and daddy' or 'eat then play', they're beginning to link ideas — the seed of cohesion.

When should I seek a check?

If your child isn't combining two words by around 24 months, it's worth a gentle developmental check. This isn't a diagnosis — it simply helps you understand your child's language journey early.
