auditory memory

When do children usually develop auditory memory?

Auditory memory — the ability to hold and recall what is heard — develops steadily from infancy. Most toddlers move from recognising familiar voices and songs (12–18 months) to following one-step (18–24 months) and two-step spoken instructions (24–36 months). The range is wide and normal; a hearing check helps if a child rarely responds to their name.

Auditory memory: when it develops in toddlers — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every time your toddler remembers your voice saying "shoes by the door" — that's auditory memory quietly at work.

In short

Auditory memory is your child's ability to hold and recall what they hear — sounds, words and short instructions. It begins in infancy and grows steadily through the toddler years: most children aged 12–36 months gradually move from recognising familiar voices and songs to following one-step, then two-step, spoken directions. There is a wide, normal range, so think of it as a steady curve rather than a single switch.

How auditory memory unfolds (12–36 months)

  • 12–18 months — turns to their name, recalls a familiar song or rhyme, follows a simple instruction paired with a gesture ("give me the ball").
  • 18–24 months — follows a one-step instruction without a gesture, points to named body parts, fills in the missing word of a well-loved rhyme.
  • 24–36 months — follows two-step instructions ("get your cup and bring it here"), repeats short phrases, and remembers parts of stories read often.

The science

Auditory memory (ICF b156) is a building block for listening, talking and, later, reading. It depends on hearing that works well, so if your child often seems not to hear or rarely responds to their name, a hearing check is a sensible first step alongside a developmental review.

What to watch

Seek a developmental and hearing review if your toddler rarely turns to their name, doesn't follow a simple instruction by around 24 months, or seems not to notice everyday sounds.

Try this at home

Play a gentle memory game: say a short rhyme daily and pause near the end so your toddler fills in the missing word — repetition builds auditory recall naturally.

Frequently asked

What is auditory memory in toddlers?

It is your child's ability to hold and recall what they hear — sounds, words and spoken instructions. It supports listening, talking and later reading.

At what age can a toddler follow two-step instructions?

Many children manage two-step instructions like "get your cup and bring it here" between 24 and 36 months, though the normal range is wide.

Should I worry if my toddler doesn't respond to their name?

If this happens often, arrange a hearing check and a developmental review. It is a sensible first step rather than a cause for alarm.
