  • Responsive imitation and serve-and-return — copying your child's sounds, actions and play, then waiting expectantly, which builds back-and-forth interaction and turn-taking.
  • Modelling and language expansion — naming what your child sees and does in short, clear phrases, then adding one or two words to what they say ("car" → "fast car").
  • Natural reinforcement — rewarding communication and effort with the very thing your child wanted (the toy, the tickle, the next turn), so learning feels meaningful, not drilled.
  • Embedding into routines — using daily activities like dressing, snacks and bath time as repeated, low-pressure practice.
  • Coaching with feedback — the therapist observes, demonstrates, then gives you supportive feedback and video review, so the techniques become second nature.

The aim is not to turn home into a clinic, but to help you respond in ways that gently grow your child's communication, play and connection — many times a day.

When parent-mediated support helps most

These approaches are widely used for early communication, social interaction and play, often for younger children and frequently alongside direct therapy. A clinician will help decide the right blend for your child, and will always review progress.
