Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

What qualifications should an ABA therapist have?

A qualified ABA therapist should hold recognised behaviour-analysis training, work within an ethics code, and practise under proper supervision — with a board-certified analyst (BCBA or equivalent) designing the plan and trained, supervised therapists delivering sessions, plus relevant RCI registration in India. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

What qualifications should an ABA therapist have? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Knowing who is guiding your child's behaviour therapy is one of the most empowering questions a parent can ask.

In short

A qualified ABA therapist should hold recognised training in behaviour analysis, work within a clear ethical code, and — crucially in India — practise under appropriate supervision and within a registered professional framework. Look for a board-certified behaviour analyst (BCBA or equivalent) designing the programme, supported by trained therapists delivering day-to-day sessions, with oversight from clinicians who understand your child's whole development. Always ask about training, supervision and how progress is measured.

What good qualifications look like

  • Programme designer (the lead): ideally a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) or someone with a postgraduate qualification in behaviour analysis or allied disciplines (psychology, special education, occupational or speech therapy). This person assesses, writes the plan and reviews progress.
  • Session therapist (the deliverer): a trained Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT) or equivalent therapist who has completed structured ABA training and works under supervision of the lead analyst — never in isolation.
  • Supervision: reputable practice means the lead reviews sessions regularly, adjusts goals from real data, and is accountable for outcomes.
  • Ethics and consent: the therapist should follow a recognised ethics code, favour positive, child-led, naturalistic strategies, and welcome your involvement — your child's dignity and comfort always come first.
  • In the Indian context: psychologists, special educators and rehabilitation professionals should hold the relevant Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) registration where it applies. Ask any provider to be transparent about their credentials.

Questions worth asking

Who designs my child's plan, and what is their qualification? Who runs the sessions, and who supervises them? How will I see progress? A confident, well-run team will answer all of these warmly and clearly.

What to watch

Watch for a provider who is vague about who designs and supervises the programme, has no recognised behaviour-analysis qualification, works without supervision, or uses high-pressure rather than positive, child-led methods.

Try this at home

Before starting, ask three simple questions: who designs the plan, who runs sessions, and how will I see progress? A confident, well-qualified team will answer all three clearly.

Frequently asked

Is a BCBA the only valid qualification for ABA?

A BCBA (Board Certified Behaviour Analyst) is a widely recognised credential for designing ABA programmes, but in India qualified psychologists, special educators and rehabilitation professionals with relevant training and RCI registration also lead behaviour support. The key is recognised training, supervision and accountability.

Can any therapist deliver ABA sessions?

Day-to-day sessions are often delivered by trained therapists or technicians, but always under the supervision of a qualified lead who designs and reviews the programme. ABA should never be delivered in isolation without oversight.

What does RCI registration mean for ABA in India?

The Rehabilitation Council of India registers rehabilitation professionals such as clinical psychologists and special educators. Where it applies, asking about RCI registration is a reasonable way to confirm a practitioner's standing.
