Motor Milestones for Your 2-Year-Old
By age 2 most toddlers walk and run steadily, climb furniture, kick a ball, build a small tower of blocks, scribble, and feed themselves with a spoon. Milestones are guideposts across a normal range, not strict deadlines — steady progress matters most. Any concern, such as not yet walking, deserves a gentle developmental check.
At two, your toddler is becoming a little explorer — running, climbing, and discovering what hands and feet can do.
In short
Most 2-year-olds can walk steadily, run, climb onto furniture, and kick a ball. They scribble with a crayon, build a tower of a few blocks, and feed themselves with a spoon. Remember — milestones are guideposts, not deadlines, and children reach them across a range of normal. What you'll often see at this age
Gross motor (big movements)- Walks and runs without falling often
- Climbs onto and down from furniture on their own
- Walks up stairs holding a rail; may kick a ball forward
- Stands on tiptoes and begins to jump with both feet
Fine motor (hands and fingers)
- Builds a tower of 4–6 blocks
- Scribbles, and may start to copy a straight line
- Turns pages of a book, one or several at a time
- Holds a spoon and feeds themselves with less spilling
The science, simply
In the WHO ICF framework, these are motor functions (b7) — the coordination of muscles, balance and movement that grow stronger through daily play. Each climb, scribble and wobble builds the brain–body connections behind walking, drawing and, later, writing. A wide range is normal; what matters is steady forward progress. The Pinnacle way

What to watch
Gently check in if your 2-year-old is not yet walking, frequently falls or seems very unsteady, has lost a skill they once had, or cannot pick up small objects or scribble. Persistent concern is reason enough for a developmental check.
Try this at home
Make a low obstacle course with cushions and a step — climbing, stepping and walking across it builds balance and leg strength while you play together.

Frequently asked
My 2-year-old isn't walking yet — should I worry?
Most children walk well before two, so if your toddler isn't yet walking independently it's worth a gentle developmental check. It's often nothing serious, but an early look gives reassurance and support if needed.
Can a 2-year-old climb stairs?
Many 2-year-olds walk up stairs holding a rail or your hand, placing both feet on each step. Alternating feet usually comes a little later, so hand-holding is normal and expected at this age.
How many blocks should a 2-year-old stack?
Around age two, many toddlers build a tower of about 4 to 6 blocks. This shows growing hand control and coordination — there's a wide normal range, so don't worry about an exact number.
