Motor milestones for your 12-to-18-month-old

By 12–18 months most toddlers walk independently, stand from the floor unaided, stoop and climb, and use both hands to stack blocks or scribble. Milestones come within a range, so a few weeks' variation is normal. Book a check if there's no walking by 18 months, loss of a skill, or strong one-sided preference.

Between one and one-and-a-half, your little one moves from those first wobbly steps to busy, confident exploring — and every tumble is part of the learning.

In short

Most 12-to-18-month-olds begin walking independently, learn to stand from the floor without holding on, and start to climb, stoop and carry toys while moving. By 18 months many can walk well, push or pull toys, and use both hands together — like stacking a couple of blocks or scribbling with a crayon. Milestones arrive across a range, not on a fixed date, so a few weeks either way is usually normal.

Milestones to look for

Gross motor (big movements)
  • 12–14 months: pulls to stand, cruises along furniture, may take first independent steps
  • 14–16 months: walks alone steadily, lowers to sit without toppling
  • 16–18 months: stoops to pick up a toy and stands again, begins to climb onto low furniture, may walk while carrying or pulling an object

Fine motor (hand skills)

  • Picks up small objects with a neat finger-and-thumb grasp
  • Bangs two objects together, stacks 2–3 blocks
  • Holds a crayon and makes marks, helps turn chunky book pages
  • Starts using a spoon and drinking from an open cup

When to check in

A gentle developmental check is worth booking if, by 18 months, your child is not walking at all, has lost a skill they once had, or uses one side of the body far more than the other. These are reasons to ask — not reasons to panic.

What to watch

Book a developmental check if, by 18 months, your child is not walking at all, has lost a previously gained skill, or consistently uses one side of the body far more than the other.

Try this at home

Give safe floor time and low, stable furniture to cruise and climb on, and offer chunky crayons and stacking blocks — everyday play is the best motor practice.

Frequently asked

When should my toddler walk independently?

Most children take their first independent steps between 12 and 15 months and walk steadily by 16–18 months. Walking up to about 18 months is within the normal range, but if your child is not walking at all by 18 months, book a developmental check.

Is it normal for my 15-month-old to fall a lot?

Yes. New walkers tumble often as they build balance and strength — frequent falls are part of healthy practice. What's worth checking is loss of a skill once gained, or a child who strongly favours one side of the body.

My toddler can't stack blocks yet — should I worry?

Stacking 2–3 blocks usually emerges around 15–18 months and varies from child to child. Offer plenty of hands-on play. If hand use seems very uneven or fine-motor skills aren't progressing by 18 months, a gentle check is sensible.
