Not Following Instructions

What makes not following instructions worse in a child?

Not following instructions usually gets worse when instructions are too long, fast or wordy, when there are distractions, tiredness or big feelings, or when hearing, language comprehension or attention need a closer look — rather than from wilful defiance. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

What makes not following instructions worse in a child?
Why following instructions gets harder for some children — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child seems to ignore what you ask, it's rarely defiance — it's often a clue about how they're hearing, understanding or processing the words.

In short

Most children don't follow instructions because something is getting in the way — not because they won't. The things that make it worse are usually around the instruction itself (too long, too fast, too many steps), the child's listening or language processing, distractions in the room, tiredness or big feelings, or an underlying area like attention, hearing or comprehension that needs a closer look. The good news: most of these are very fixable once you know which one is in play.

What tends to make it worse

  • Too many steps at once — a child who can manage "get your shoes" may freeze at "get your shoes, put your bottle in the bag and wait by the door".
  • Fast or wordy instructions — language given quickly, or buried in extra words, can be hard to catch and hold onto.
  • Background noise and distractions — a busy TV, multiple voices or an exciting toy make it harder to register your words at all.
  • Tiredness, hunger or overwhelm — a dysregulated or overstimulated child has very little capacity left for listening.
  • No eye contact or attention first — instructions called across a room, before the child is actually attending, rarely land.
  • Hearing or language gaps — intermittent hearing (such as with ear infections) or still-developing comprehension means the words genuinely don't go in.
  • Inconsistent follow-through — if instructions are sometimes dropped, a child learns that waiting works better than acting.

Notice that almost none of these are about a "naughty" child. Following instructions is a skill that rests on hearing, attention, language understanding and self-regulation all working together — and any one of those can be the sticking point.

When to seek a check

If not following instructions is frequent across home, playgroup and with different people, if your child seems not to hear well, isn't understanding simple everyday language for their age, or if it comes with delays in talking, attention or play, a developmental check is wise. A clinician can gently tell apart a normal stage from a listening, language or attention area that would benefit from support — and a hearing screen is often a sensible first step.

The Pinnacle way

Across [70+ centres in 4 states](/) with 700+ therapists, we look at why instructions aren't landing rather than assuming it's behaviour. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app or online form. Your child's listening, language and attention are mapped through a clinician-administered AbilityScore® assessment, and support is often shaped through speech therapy so understanding and following instructions grow together.

What to watch

Watch for instructions not landing across home, playgroup and with different people, signs your child may not hear well, trouble understanding simple everyday language for their age, or delays in talking, attention or play alongside it.

Try this at home

Get down to your child's eye level, gain their attention first, then give one short, clear instruction at a time — and pause to let the words sink in before adding the next.

Frequently asked

Is my child not following instructions on purpose?

Usually not. Following instructions depends on hearing, attention, language understanding and self-regulation all working together. When a child consistently doesn't follow through, it's far more often that one of these is the sticking point than that they're being deliberately defiant.

How many instructions should my child be able to follow?

It grows with age — younger toddlers manage one simple step, while older preschoolers handle two or three linked steps. If your child struggles even with single, clear instructions for their age, a developmental check helps tell apart a normal stage from an area that needs support.

Could a hearing problem be the cause?

Yes — intermittent hearing, such as with repeated ear infections, can mean the words genuinely don't go in. A hearing screen is often a sensible first step before assuming it's behaviour or attention.
