Low-Tech AAC: Simple Communication Options That Work

Low-tech AAC includes picture cards, communication boards and books, PECS-style picture exchange, choice boards, gestures and key-word signing, and core-word or alphabet boards. These no-power tools are portable, low-cost and proven to support — not replace — spoken language. A speech-language therapist can match the right starting board and vocabulary to your child.

Low-Tech AAC: Simple Communication Options That Work
Low-Tech AAC Options That Help Your Child Communicate — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When words are hard to come by, a picture, a board, or a pointed finger can open a whole world — and none of it needs a screen or a battery.

In short

Low-tech AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) means simple, no-power tools that help a child who isn't yet speaking — or who speaks unreliably — to communicate right now. The most common options are picture cards, communication books and boards, symbol or photo exchange systems (like PECS), choice boards, gestures and key-word signing, and alphabet or core-word boards for children who can spell or recognise words. These are powerful starting points: research is clear that giving a child a way to communicate does not hold back speech — it usually encourages it.

The options, explained simply

  • Picture cards & photographs — real photos or simple symbols of favourite foods, toys, people and activities your child can hand over or point to.
  • Communication boards — a single sheet grouping useful symbols (drink, more, all done, help) so your child can point to express needs at meals, play or bedtime.
  • Communication books — a small flip-folder organised by topic (food, feelings, places) for a wider vocabulary on the go.
  • PECS-style exchange — your child hands a picture to a partner to make a request, building the powerful idea that communication gets a response.
  • Choice boards — two or three options side by side ("banana or biscuit?") to give your child a real say.
  • Gestures & key-word signing — pairing a sign with a spoken word for everyday concepts like more, eat, sleep.
  • Core-word & alphabet boards — for children who can recognise words or letters, a small set of high-use words that combine into many messages.

Low-tech tools are portable, robust, low-cost and always available — which is exactly why many children begin here, often alongside speech therapy, before any high-tech device is considered.

When to seek guidance

If your child is past the usual milestones for first words or two-word phrases, points and gestures instead of speaking, or gets frustrated trying to be understood, a speech-language therapist can help choose the right starting board and vocabulary for your child. There is no "too young" and no prerequisite — AAC supports communication at every level.

What to watch

Watch for your child reaching, leading you by the hand or pointing to get needs met instead of using words, frustration when not understood, or first words or two-word phrases not emerging around the expected ages — all signs a low-tech AAC start could help.

Try this at home

Keep a simple choice board at mealtimes — even two real photos ("banana or biscuit?") lets your child make a genuine choice and learn that communicating brings a response.

Frequently asked

Will using picture cards or AAC stop my child from talking?

No. Evidence consistently shows that AAC does not delay or block speech — it often encourages it by reducing frustration and showing your child that communication gets a response.

Is my child too young to start low-tech AAC?

There is no minimum age and no prerequisite skills. Simple tools like choice boards and gestures can support communication at any developmental level, and a therapist will tailor them to your child.

What is the difference between low-tech and high-tech AAC?

Low-tech AAC uses no power — picture cards, boards, books and signing. High-tech AAC uses devices or apps with speech output. Many children begin with low-tech tools, sometimes alongside or before any device.
