What is the RBSK scheme and how does it help my child?

RBSK (Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram) is India's free government child-health screening scheme, covering birth to 18 years for birth defects, diseases, deficiencies and developmental delays. It detects concerns early and refers children to free follow-up care — but it is a screen, not a diagnosis.

RBSK: A Free Promise of Early Child Health Checks — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Government health schemes can feel like paperwork — but RBSK is really a promise: that every child gets checked, early, free of cost.

In short

Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) is the Government of India's child-health screening programme under the National Health Mission. It offers free screening for children from birth to 18 years across the "4 Ds" — Defects at birth, Diseases, Deficiencies and Developmental delays including disability — and connects children who need help to free follow-up care. For your child, it means early detection of developmental concerns at no cost, often right at the anganwadi or school.

What RBSK actually does for your child

RBSK uses trained Mobile Health Teams who visit anganwadis and government schools to screen children for 30+ identified health conditions. The areas most relevant to development include:
  • Developmental delays — in speech, movement, social and learning milestones
  • Disabilities — including hearing, vision and motor concerns
  • Birth defects and deficiencies — picked up early in infancy

When a screening flags a concern, RBSK provides a referral pathway to a District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) or higher facility for confirmation and management — and the assessment and treatment under the scheme are free. Crucially, RBSK is a screening programme: it raises a flag for a closer look. It does not, by itself, diagnose your child or replace a detailed developmental assessment.

How to use it as a parent

  • Ask your anganwadi worker, ASHA, or school about the next RBSK screening visit
  • If your child is referred, follow up promptly — early action is where the real benefit lies
  • Keep a simple record of any concern you've noticed at home; your observation is valuable to the screening team

The Pinnacle way

Think of RBSK as the gateway and a detailed assessment as the next room. A clinical AbilityScore® — a structured, clinician-administered profile of your child's strengths across communication, movement, learning and daily skills — and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care, never from a screen alone. If an RBSK screening or your own instinct says "look closer," we can take it from there with [a developmental assessment](/) and, where helpful, speech therapy and other supports.

Trusted sources

RBSK sits within India's National Health Mission framework; for the wider rationale behind early childhood screening and intervention, the WHO Nurturing Care framework and the American Academy of Pediatrics' guidance on developmental surveillance and screening are helpful, parent-friendly references.

What to watch

If an RBSK screening flags a concern, or if you keep noticing a delay at home, follow up promptly rather than waiting for the next visit — early action gives your child the most benefit.

Try this at home

Before the next anganwadi or school screening, jot down anything you've noticed about your child's speech, movement or play. Your observation helps the screening team look in the right place.

Frequently asked

Is RBSK screening free?

Yes. RBSK screening under India's National Health Mission is free, and so is the follow-up care and treatment for conditions identified through the scheme, including referrals to District Early Intervention Centres.

What ages does RBSK cover?

RBSK covers children from birth to 18 years, screening for birth defects, diseases, deficiencies and developmental delays including disabilities — often at anganwadis and government schools.

Does RBSK diagnose my child?

No. RBSK is a screening programme that flags concerns for a closer look and refers your child for further assessment. A formal diagnosis is made only by qualified clinicians after a detailed evaluation.

What should I do if my child is referred by RBSK?

Follow up promptly. A referral means a closer look is recommended — early assessment and support give your child the best outcomes. You can also seek a detailed developmental assessment at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre.
