Griffiths Scales of Child Development, 3rd ed. (Griffiths III)

The Griffiths Scales of Child Development, 3rd edition (Griffiths III) is an internationally used, clinician-administered assessment that looks at how a child is developing from birth up to around 6 years (roughly 0–72 months). Through observed, play-based tasks and parent-reported information, it builds a profile across several developmental areas rather than a single number. It is a tool that trained professionals use to understand a child's strengths and the areas that may benefit from support — not a pass-or-fail test, and not a diagnosis on its own.

What the Griffiths III assesses

The Griffiths III brings together five areas of development, so a clinician can see the whole child rather than one skill in isolation:

• Foundations of Learning — early thinking, attention, memory and problem-solving.
• Language and Communication — understanding language and expressing needs and ideas.
• Eye and Hand Co-ordination — fine-motor control, visual tracking and dexterity (the skills behind drawing, building and self-care).
• Personal–Social–Emotional — relating to others, independence and emotional development.
• Gross Motor — larger movements such as sitting, crawling, walking and balance.

Together these produce a developmental profile that shows where a child is flourishing and where they may need a little extra help. Because it is administered by a trained professional in a warm, play-based way, the experience usually feels like guided play to the child. The Griffiths III is widely used internationally and is available in many languages, which makes it valuable across diverse families.

How it is used

A Griffiths III assessment is one part of a fuller clinical picture. Professionals use it to map a young child's development, to plan and tailor support, and to monitor progress over time. It is most meaningful when interpreted by a qualified clinician alongside a child's history, observations and family input — never as a stand-alone label.
