Their thinking and talking are strong; the written code is the sticking point.

A child with social communication difficulties may read words on a page well, yet find the unwritten rules of conversation puzzling. You might see trouble taking turns to talk, missing jokes or sarcasm, standing too close, sharing too much or too little, or struggling to adjust how they speak to a teacher versus a friend. The challenge is in the social use of language, not the letters.

When to seek a check

Reliable signs of dyslexia usually become clear around ages 6–8, once formal reading teaching is underway — earlier, watch for delayed talking, trouble with rhymes, and difficulty learning letter names. Social communication patterns can be observed earlier through play and conversation. If reading is unexpectedly hard for a clearly capable child, or if connecting and conversing feels consistently tricky, a developmental screening is the kind, sensible next step.
