Developmental Coordination Disorder vs Hearing Impairment

DCD vs Hearing Impairment in Young Children

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a motor difficulty — a child struggles to plan and carry out everyday movements like dressing, writing or catching, despite normal hearing and understanding. Hearing impairment is a difficulty with hearing itself, which most affects listening, speech and language. DCD is about moving; hearing impairment is about hearing. They show up differently and need different support, though a child can have both. Hearing should be checked promptly; motor concerns are assessed as a child grows.

One is about how a child's body learns to move; the other is about how a child's ears let sound in — and telling them apart early changes everything.

In short

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a motor difficulty — a child's brain and body struggle to plan and carry out everyday movements like buttoning a shirt, holding a pencil, jumping or catching a ball, even though there is no muscle weakness or hearing problem. Hearing impairment is a difficulty with hearing — the ears (or the hearing pathway) do not pass sound to the brain fully, which most affects listening, speech and language. In short: DCD is about moving; hearing impairment is about hearing. They look different, are checked differently, and need different support — though a child can have both.

How they show up differently in young children

With DCD, you might notice a child who is clumsy or 'always knocking things over', late to sit, crawl or walk, slow to learn dressing or feeding themselves, who avoids puzzles, drawing or playground climbing, and tires quickly during physical play. Their understanding and hearing are typically fine — it is the coordination of movement that lags behind their age.

With hearing impairment, you might notice a baby who does not startle to loud sounds or turn towards your voice, a toddler slow to babble or speak, a child who needs the television loud, asks 'what?' often, doesn't respond when called from another room, or seems to 'ignore' you. Speech may be unclear or delayed, because a child learns to talk from the sounds they hear.

A simple way to hold it: a child with DCD usually hears and understands you well but finds doing the action hard; a child with hearing impairment may find hearing the instruction the harder part. Because unclear speech can appear in both, and because the two can co-exist, a proper check is what sorts it out.

When to have it checked

Hearing should be checked promptly at any age — newborn hearing screening is routine, and any concern about a child not responding to sound deserves an early hearing test, because early support protects speech and language. Motor coordination concerns are usually watched and assessed as a child grows and the gap between them and their peers becomes clearer. The reassuring part: both are very supportable, and the earlier they are understood, the better.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. Our team observes how your child moves, listens, communicates and plays, then recommends the right path — occupational therapy for motor coordination, and speech therapy alongside audiology where hearing and language are part of the picture. What to watch

Watch for a clumsy child who is late to dress, draw or catch yet hears and understands well (possible DCD), versus a child who doesn't startle to sound, is slow to babble or speak, turns the TV loud or seems to 'ignore' you (possible hearing concern). Unclear speech can appear in both, so a proper check sorts it out.

Try this at home

Play a quiet listening-and-doing game: from a few steps away, ask your child to do a fun action ('touch your nose, then clap'). If they don't respond, gently check whether they didn't hear, or heard but found the movement tricky — and note it for your clinician.

Frequently asked

Can a child have both DCD and a hearing impairment?

Yes. A child can have difficulty with movement coordination and with hearing at the same time. Because both can affect how clearly a child speaks, a clinician assesses each area separately so the right support is given for each.

My child's speech is unclear — is it DCD or hearing?

Unclear speech can come from either, or from other causes. A child with hearing impairment may not hear sounds clearly enough to copy them; a child with motor difficulties may struggle to coordinate the mouth movements. A hearing test plus a developmental check is the way to tell.

When should I have my child's hearing checked?

Promptly, at any age. Newborn hearing screening is routine, and any concern about a child not responding to sound, being slow to babble or speak, or seeming to 'ignore' you deserves an early hearing test, because early support protects speech and language.
