For Specific Learning Disability, the most powerful support begins early — in the pre-school and early-primary years (around 4–7) — even though a firm diagnosis usually isn't made until about age 6–8, once formal reading, writing and number learning is well underway. You don't have to wait for a label: early, targeted help with pre-literacy, language and learning-readiness skills can make a real, lasting difference. The honest answer is that the best age to start is simply now, at whatever age you first notice your child finding learning unexpectedly hard.

Why early — and why a diagnosis comes later

Specific Learning Disability (WHO ICD-11 calls it Developmental Learning Disorder) is recognised when a child's reading, writing or maths skills fall well below what's expected for their age, despite good teaching and effort. Because these skills are only being formally taught from around age 6, a confident diagnosis usually waits until that age. But the foundations are built much earlier:

• Ages 3–5 — watch for difficulty learning rhymes, letter names or sounds, mixing up words, or trouble following multi-step instructions. Support here strengthens phonological awareness and language.
• Ages 5–7 — if reading, spelling or number sense lags noticeably behind peers, this is the ideal window for structured, evidence-based remediation while the brain is highly adaptable.
• Ages 8+ — support still works very well and is never "too late"; the focus broadens to include skill-building plus confidence and self-advocacy.

Starting early is about the developing brain's plasticity — younger learners often respond faster, and timely help protects a child's confidence before repeated struggle erodes it.

When to seek a check

Seek a developmental and learning check if your child consistently finds reading, writing, spelling or maths much harder than peers despite good support; reverses letters or words well past the early years; avoids or dreads reading and homework; or seems bright in conversation yet struggles on the page. An assessment can begin clarifying things from around age 6, but earlier concerns are always worth raising.
