People

What is "People" in child development?

"People" in child development describes how a toddler relates to others — noticing, connecting, sharing attention and interacting. It belongs to the social area of development, spanning eye contact, seeking comfort, copying, pointing to share and early turn-taking. It is not a diagnosis but a way of noticing how warmly a child engages, so the right playful support can be offered early.

Long before a toddler can say much, they are already learning the most human skill of all — how to be with other people.

In short

In child development, "People" describes how your toddler relates to others — noticing them, connecting with them, and learning to interact, share and respond. It sits within the social area of development and covers everything from making eye contact and seeking a cuddle to copying a wave, playing peek-a-boo and beginning to take turns. It is not a test or a diagnosis — it is simply a way of noticing how warmly and confidently your little one engages with the people around them.

What "People" skills look like in toddlers

Between roughly 12 and 36 months, social connection blooms in everyday moments. You may notice your toddler bringing you a toy to show you, looking back to check you are watching, pointing to share something exciting, copying your actions, or beginning simple turn-taking in play. They start to recognise familiar faces with joy, seek comfort when upset, and slowly learn to play alongside — and then with — other children. Every child grows along their own timeline, so differences are an invitation to support, never a label. Warm back-and-forth moments — smiling, naming, responding — are how these skills are built.

When to seek a review

Consider a gentle developmental check if, over time, your toddler rarely makes eye contact, shows little interest in other people, does not share attention by pointing or showing, or seems not to respond to their name. Early, playful support helps a capable child build confidence in connecting.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. Our team looks at how your child connects with people across play and daily life, then builds a warm, individualised plan that may draw on behaviour therapy and other supports as needed.

What to watch

Rarely making eye contact, little interest in other people, not sharing attention by pointing or showing, or not responding to their name over time.

Try this at home

Build connection through play — name what you see, pause and wait for your toddler to respond, play peek-a-boo and copying games, and follow their lead so back-and-forth moments grow naturally.

Frequently asked

Is "People" the same as a diagnosis?

No. "People" simply describes the social area of how your toddler relates to others. It is a way of noticing strengths and where support may help — never a diagnosis, which is only formed at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

At what age do toddlers start showing social "People" skills?

Social connection begins in infancy and blooms between 12 and 36 months — sharing attention by pointing, copying actions, seeking comfort and beginning simple turn-taking. Every child grows on their own timeline.

What if my toddler seems less interested in other people?

Differences are an invitation to support, not a label. If you notice little eye contact, limited interest in others or no response to their name over time, a gentle developmental review can map strengths and start helpful, playful support early.
