standing balance

An Everyday Therapy Activity for Standing Balance

Try bubble-popping while your toddler stands on a cushion or folded blanket. The gentle wobble of the soft surface makes their balance muscles work harder, while reaching and twisting to pop bubbles builds postural control — all disguised as joyful play.

Some of the best therapy doesn't look like therapy at all — it looks like play, on a slightly squishy surface, with you cheering close by.

In short

A wonderful everyday activity for standing balance is bubble-popping while standing on a cushion or folded blanket. Stand your toddler on a slightly soft, uneven surface and let them reach, lean and stamp to pop bubbles you blow around them. The gentle wobble of the surface makes their little muscles and balance system work harder — and because it feels like a game, they'll happily do it again and again.

How to do it (5–10 minutes)

  • Place a firm cushion, sofa seat or folded blanket on the floor; help your child stand on it with bare feet.
  • Stay close and within arm's reach — let them hold your hand or a low table at first, then encourage hands-free moments.
  • Blow bubbles high, low and to the side so they reach, twist and shift their weight to pop them.
  • Celebrate every pop. Stamping, giggling and wobbling are all part of the work.
  • As they grow steadier, try popping on one foot, or standing on the cushion to drop balls into a bucket.

The science

Standing balance (ICF d4, mobility) develops as the body learns to combine muscle strength, vision and the inner-ear balance system. An unstable surface gives the body small, safe challenges to correct — building the postural control toddlers need to walk, climb and run confidently. Reaching across the midline while staying upright adds a lovely bonus for coordination.

The Pinnacle way

Every child's balance journey is their own. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under the care of a qualified clinician — never from a home activity or an online tool. If you'd like tailored play ideas, our team can help through structured pediatric physiotherapy and a clinician-administered AbilityScore® assessment.

What to watch

Notice steadier standing, fewer falls, and more hands-free moments over a few weeks. If your toddler isn't pulling to stand by 12 months, can't stand briefly without support by 15–18 months, or seems to lose skills they once had, mention it at a developmental check.

Try this at home

Keep it short and joyful — 5 minutes of barefoot bubble-popping on a cushion beats a long session. Bare feet help little ones feel and grip the surface.

Frequently asked

At what age should my toddler be able to stand on their own?

Most children pull to stand around 9–12 months and stand briefly without support by 12–15 months, becoming steadier through the second year. Every child has their own pace — if you're unsure, a developmental check can reassure you.

Is standing on a soft surface safe for my child?

Yes, when you stay within arm's reach on a clear, padded floor. Start with your child holding your hand or a low support, and let them go hands-free only as they grow steadier.

How often should we practise balance activities?

Little and often works best — a few minutes of playful balance practice most days is far more effective and enjoyable than one long session.
