An Everyday Therapy activity for receptive and expressive communication

One easy everyday activity is the Sabotage Game: create small friendly problems your child must solve by communicating — hand them a closed box or bubbles, wait expectantly, then model and respond instantly when they word, sign or point, building both understanding and expression in motivating real-life moments.

One Everyday Activity to Grow Your Child's Communication — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Some of the best therapy happens at the kitchen table — in the back-and-forth of a really good chat.

In short

One lovely everyday activity is the Sabotage Game woven into play and routines: gently create small, friendly "problems" your child must solve by communicating. Hand them a closed snack box, a crayon with no paper, or bubbles without blowing them — then wait, look expectant, and let your child use a word, sign or point to ask. This builds both receptive skills (understanding you) and expressive skills (telling you) in real, motivating moments.

How to do it at home

  • Set it up: Choose something your child wants — a favourite toy, snack or bubbles.
  • Pause and wait: Offer it with a smile, then wait 5–10 seconds. The silence invites them to communicate.
  • Model, don't quiz: If they reach, say the word for them — "open!", "more bubbles!" — then respond instantly so they learn that words work.
  • Build up: Move from single words to short phrases ("want more", "my turn") as your child grows. Keep it joyful — never frustrating.
  • Repeat across the day: Mealtimes, bath, dressing and play all offer natural moments.

The science

Children learn language best in shared, motivating interactions with a responsive adult — what speech and language research calls responsive communication. Building in a brief expectant pause (the "communication temptation") gives your child the space and reason to initiate, which strengthens both understanding and expression. Following your child's lead and matching their level keeps the activity within reach and fun.

What to watch

Watch for new words, gestures or signs your child uses to ask for things, and whether they understand simple instructions the first time. If your child shows little interest in communicating or makes no new gains over several weeks, mention it at a developmental check.

Try this at home

At snack time, hand over a closed container and wait with a smile for 5–10 seconds — let your child ask in any way they can, then open it instantly so they learn that communicating works.

Frequently asked

How long should this activity take each day?

Just a few minutes scattered through the day works best — mealtimes, bath, dressing and play all give natural chances. Short, joyful and frequent beats one long session.

My child gets frustrated when I wait — should I stop?

Keep the challenge tiny and friendly, and respond quickly to any attempt — a sound, point or gesture all count. If frustration builds, ease back and model the word for them, then celebrate together. It should always feel like a game.

At what age does this activity suit?

It works well from around 3 to 7 years and can be tuned to your child's level — single words for early communicators, short phrases as they grow. Younger children benefit from simpler versions too.

Does this replace speech therapy?

No — it beautifully supports it, but a clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre forms any assessment or AbilityScore®. Everyday activities and professional therapy work best together.
