One Everyday Activity to Build Your Child's Self-Awareness

Try the 'Feelings Mirror': sit together at a mirror, name a feeling and make the matching face. This 5-minute daily game helps a 3–7 year old connect inner feelings with outer expressions — the foundation of self-awareness.

The Feelings Mirror: Build Your Child's Self-Awareness — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Self-awareness begins with the simplest question a child can answer — 'How do I feel right now?' — and you can build it at home, one calm moment at a time.

In short

A wonderful everyday activity is the Feelings Mirror: sit with your child in front of a mirror, name a feeling together (happy, sad, cross, sleepy), and make the matching face together. This helps your 3–7 year old connect what they feel inside with what shows on the outside — the very heart of self-awareness. Keep it short, playful and judgement-free.

How to do it at home

  • Start with the mirror. Make a big happy face together and say, "This is happy!" Then try sad, surprised, sleepy. Let your child copy and lead.
  • Name the body clues. "When I'm cross, my tummy feels tight." Helping a child notice body signals builds inner awareness, not just facial labels.
  • Catch real moments. Through the day, gently narrate: "You're smiling — you feel proud!" or "Your hands are bunched up — are you frustrated?" This links the game to real life.
  • Stay warm, never test them. There are no wrong answers. The aim is noticing and naming, together.

Do this for just 5 minutes a day. Repetition across calm and tricky moments is what makes it stick.

The little bit of science

Self-awareness sits at the foundation of emotional skills — a child who can name a feeling is far better placed to manage it. Naming emotions (sometimes called "affect labelling") helps a child pause before reacting, and it builds the vocabulary they later use to ask for help. By age 3–7, children are primed to learn this through play and your gentle, repeated modelling. Linking the feeling to a body clue and a facial expression gives the brain three pathways to the same idea — making the learning stronger.

The Pinnacle way

Every child's emotional journey is their own, so any clinical AbilityScore® or diagnosis is formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under the care of a qualified clinician — never from a home activity alone. What to watch

Notice whether your child begins naming feelings independently over weeks. If they consistently struggle to recognise or express emotions, or seem overwhelmed by them, mention it at a developmental check.

Try this at home

Play the Feelings Mirror for 5 minutes a day: make matching faces, name the feeling, and point out one body clue — 'When I'm cross, my tummy feels tight.'

Frequently asked

At what age can I start the Feelings Mirror activity?

It works beautifully from around age 3 to 7. Younger children enjoy copying faces, while older ones can name feelings and notice body clues. Keep it playful and brief at any age.

What if my child gives the wrong feeling name?

There are no wrong answers — the goal is noticing and naming together, not testing. Gently model the feeling yourself and let your child join in at their own pace.

How long before I see results?

Children differ, but with a few minutes of daily play and gentle real-life narration, many parents notice their child starting to name feelings independently over several weeks.
